You do have a point however. Much like the "recover a disk that has been zeroed out" competition, the prize seems somewhat small for the magnitude of the task. Admittedly, the prize is more then an order of magnitude higher, (and just requi

But then why bother having the poll in the first place? If you're just going prune the results so that they look like what you expect, you aren't really polling. You already know the answer, and you're going to throw out data until you get

The bigger issue with veganism (and to a lesser extent vegetarianism) is that it requires cleverness to avoid malnutrition. Like it or not, the human colon is too short for a generic vegan diet; we evolved to eat meat. There are people who

Straight Debian is much like Ubuntu, but without the weight. It's much easier to get it down to a minimal size for VM's (I know a guy who made a tiny version, with barely enough in the kernel to boot.)

Notice NOAA's statement... When we have enough energy to fly at nearly the speed of light, we might be able to control hurricanes. Given that the NOAA people are probably smart, they probably realize how difficult this is.

But Fog Creek is small. Both of my offers for this summer were at least 30/hour. Furthermore, the average wage at my school is 22/hour (for ECE interns).

Especially given that many corps. have intranet applications which require ie6. And since Microsoft will not alienate them, they will continue on happily not upgrading.

You could just write a FUSE driver to support this. It would not be very hard. Since that sounds like what you want, why not do it?

This will not work. As shown by CEO pay, publicizing this data led to people feeling like they were in competition for higher and higher wages. CEO wages increased massively as a result.

3D UIs are not necessarily bad. They are not suited to a 2D display. Solve that problem and you might be able to implement an actual 3D UI.

Indeed. I saw a talk by Chris about Gazelle, and the numbers put it far behind IE8 in terms of performance (it is based on IE8, so that acts as a lower bound). Starting from your own core, it might be possible to keep separation of concerns

This 'rule' is a very modern invention, IIRC. 'They' was used as the singular indeterminate-gender third person pronoun for quite a while. Then, someone decided that it was bad, and grammarians rejoiced, despite the awkward construct of he/

To flush out this point, consider that hiring someone is not free. There can be significant costs of hiring someone who performs poorly (opportunity cost, training overhead, lost work).

Especially because the "upgrade" asks nicely. So instead of silently getting IE8, you get asked "Do you want IE8".

Also, many Microsoft products are actually quality products. The few bad apples give the rest a bad name (also, some of the 3rd party apps give Windows in general a bad name).
