SQS, S3 and EC2 were all internal systems that they decided to start offering publicly at some point. That’s the widely understood history. I’d love to read anything contrary to that, sounds very interesting

Apologies, I was actually going to finish my comment with “does anyone know how the fail rate of such startups stacks against the fail rate of startups at large?” But I got carried away with trying to recall all the companies that started o

This has got to be the most user hostile website I have ever seen, by quite a margin. Wow. It’s only missing the spinning roulette when you go to exit the site.

For simplicity, software must be well built. Unfortunately, the software development practice is perpetually underskilled so we release buggy crap which we compensate for in infrastructure.

There's little of that to go around in Japan. They strongly subscribe to power structures (see Senpai-Kohai) - seniors are unimpeachable and highly respected.

Every public company, yes. Private companies can afford not to subscribe to the single core tenet of capitalism which is to "maximize shareholder value".

The comparison to a soccer team is very odd. Further, Brian seems to completely misunderstand the point of standup as he's trying to argue that standup is not conducive for collaboration. Standup is not the forum for collaboration. Sta

Most systems are "distributed" actually, even your CRUD apps and CLI tools that write to disk. The better question is "how do you learn to deal with distributed systems intricacies in places where it matters (such as finance)

Why not celebrate the achievements of the industry allowing us to build something like this in 80 LOC?

It depends on what you mean exactly by “tech companies”. Physical PoP comes up as a requirement in many places. Even the famously remote-only GitLab, has offices throughout the globe.

That right there is the main problem with python dependency management - too many damn ways to do the same thing. And to think "There should be one-- and preferably only one --obvious way to do it." is in the Zen of Python...
