I'm a European AI researcher in the US. I've seen both sides of the pond. The EU needs serious reforms if it wants to be competitive in AI. Academia in Europe is far behind academia in the US on average. And will be far behind Chi

No problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5q_z8BjiYng This is one example of many. The original poster was just spreading FUD and saying nasty things about Alcubierre as a researcher. He gives talks like this all the time

In case someone doesn't believe my observations from conferences. Just look below. Neither INRIA nor EP are in the top 30 institutions with publications at ICML and only INRIA is in the top 50 (at 14, not bad!) at NIPS. EP isn't i

My answer is mostly with respect to CS which I know best, although it does apply to other fields. This is in no way arrogance. France has a history of long-time academics that are totally inactive but take up a faculty line for decades. Thi

It's "papers" like this by people that are either clueless or malicious that make everyone pine for the pre-arxiv days. Everyone considered this option. From the very first day the paradox was posed. We don't know the pa

I've read quite a bit. I have a PhD in a broadly related field. I tried to explain that you're just confused about what heritability means in this context, what the relative effect sizes are of environmental factors vs parents, th

The idea that IQ is heritable, as in the genes from your parents have a substantial effect on your IQ (leaving aside diseases), is far from established and most cognitive psychologists would violently disagree. Any effect from your parent&#

The contribution has to be pretty substantial. And it can't be just one piece of work. The standards around these parts are something like 4+ papers (around 1 paper per year for 5-6 years) preferably including one or two solid journal

This isn't a UK PhD, at least it's not up to the standard of any rational UK PhD I've ever seen. I've supervised Masters theses and PhDs in the US at a top institution. No one can do a part-time PhD; it's just so mu

That's a confusing way to look at things. Lets make the two scenarios more similar. Say "earth" is a sphere with radius 1 meter and you're 1 meter away. And that puny magnet defeats its gravitational pull in the same way
