I know and have worked with coders in their 50s, even 60s. They were very much what I'd call 9-to-5 coders though. They were never given big, important or new projects but as a consequence were never expected to burn the midnight oil. The m

Before HN, before Digg, before any kind of social networking or all encompassing tech news sites, there was Slashdot. I still remember when one of the first questions to ask a fellow programmer was, "You on Slashdot? What's your number?"

I know the branding can act as a mask over different companies e.g. Sony VAIOs http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/357289/sony-announces-division-t... . As you point out we're going from US mobile to UK broadband. But the point of the brand is to

I'm a Virgin Media customer in the UK. My home internet connection stopped working recently and (long story short) in dealing with trying to fix it, it turns out my main login password for their service can be accessed by support staff. Thi

If I recall correctly, wasn't the reason Jeff Atwood (codinghorror) stepped down from active work on StackExchange owing to spending more time with his children? I'd be interested to know his view on this article. Edit: Also, my PhD supervi

I don't remember the lectures I gave, or the students who fell asleep in my first few tutorials... but I do remember the students who asked me about concepts they didn't fully understand and how great it felt when I could see the idea click

Does anyone have the same problem with SO that I do? I'm an experienced dev in some general / mature technologies, mainly the C-like languages (I know C# inside out) but essentially, nothing too specialised. Anytime I've gone on SO to try t

I can't recommend Tim Harford's 'The Undercover Economist' enough. There's a great chapter on Cameroon and exactly why it's the way it is.

I was going to try to write a short description but I may as well just link to the wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategy_pattern This design pattern gives you the freedom to select algorithms for different behaviours without be

I hope it comes across in the preamble that I've been using F# (the only functional programming language I've ever tried out) for just a few days and as such I simply don't know which is which yet. Anybody who's read this blog post and is i

I can't really speak from any experience as I've only just started programming in F# myself, I think for the most part it's not meant to replace the things you mention. The reason I looked into it initially was because of its applicability

Thanks for the feedback. To be honest I haven't really grasped all the ins and outs of functional programming yet so tried to ignore it as a first step. From what I've seen so far, I do like how much all the typing takes care of itself.
