Yeah, I agree that this woman made some pretty stupid decisions, I mean I wouldn't exactly get a home loan to buy a house unless I knew I would be able to pay it off! The difference though is that you probably wouldn't enter into a home loa

I assume it's $1600/year that you'd be paying back :) That's still not bad (I finished uni in 2003 and the Howard government was busy killing VSU and pushing the fees up at the time). Also, I believe it's tiered depending on what sort of de

It's a bit close to home since I did a PhD in a "useless" area (philosophy) but my area of philosophy happens to be very popular at the moment in industry as well as university so it's more likely that I'd get a job (I do technology ethics)

Yet another reason I'm glad I went through the Australian system... government funded loans and subsidised education (I paid about 2.5k AUD per year for my degree, which is about US$2200, at one of the top universities in Australia), where

Oh, I see. I thought it was just about how #flotilla wasn't being reported in the trending topics. How odd, indeed!

I'm a technology ethicist (with a BSc in CS though!), so I have to jump in here and say that society-aware and ethical design principles are seriously missing. Things like how to involve the stakeholders (not just the client, but anyone who

As a woman, the underlying idea isn't actually such a bad thing, though I'm not sure about the way they're marketing it. There are several menstruation calendars on the market, they're good for a whole lot of things, from pre-warning you ab

I just quit my job, and the first part is what I did, pretty much. Though, I came in with a reasonable offer (and in line with the employment laws here in Belgium). We then negotiated a bit and now I'm just redrafting my official letter to

Sounds to me as though the second paragraph sums it up pretty well; the police in AU have been far more aggressive about hacking offences in the last few years. It's quite probable that the worn passport, plus the fact he was caught hacking

Oh, and the time when my bank's netbank SSL certificate expired, and it took them 3 days to get it fixed because it seemed noone knew what was going on... that was great! lol.

I travel a lot and it constantly astounds me how many hotels want me to email them credit card details to secure a reservation. I had a hotel (in Spain) lose my reservation because I insisted on calling them up and reading my number over

Since I grew up in the 80s and 90s I've always enjoyed using 90210 -- ahh for the days of bad hair and even worse acting! ;) This looks like an awesome idea. I would absolutely be interested if I was in the US! (no chance of it coming to Be

It seems a bit odd to me that he talks about working remotely and how awesome it was, but then all the coding jobs for his site (which he was somewhat selling in this entry) are for people "in an office in NY". But I agree, if you're workin

Yes, I'm having the same problem. I think perhaps it's because of the contrast. The bold black on white is perhaps a bit too contrasty? Maybe make the background slightly off-white (like HN does)? Otherwise, looks awesome! I'll add it to my

Oh, I totally agree about the use of Amnesty International's reports, but what I'm arguing for is the use of these other (for Western countries, especially non-Western) external perspectives in order to allow for some reflection on the syst

Also good for work travel when all you want to do is show a couple of presentations & take some notes, but don't want to lug around a couple of thousand euro MBP with you. :)
