See Bryan Cantrill's talk from LISA: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zRN7XLCRhc&feature=playe... , where he has a good comparison of not anthromorpizing Larry Ellison and Oracle. Paraphrased, "Think of him of as a lawnmower. The lawnm

Fire hazard maybe? Trash cans were removed from commuter trains in Stockholm since they were constantly being set on fire. They're on our buses though. Go to England and you won't see trash cans in train stations at all.

All grocery stores around me use a sealed cash system. I've been more often stuck behind people wanting to pay with cash when the cash scanner breaks down compared to the card machine being down.

Yes, Visa, MC and Amex take a cut. This infuriated shopowners to no end when they raised their tariffs, prompting a wave of "no charges under 50kr" or "3kr extra if you're paying with card (under x kr)"

We solve this by having most everyone use jabber to communicate, so minor interruptions are less frequent since they are shifted to IM.

DT770s are one of the "standard" studio monitoring headphones, and seen pretty often among touring sound techs (esp the M version which is the one meant for drummers due to higher volume and isolation). I've used a pair of them since 2005 f

Neither those nor emacs-nav come close to working and looking the same way the file tree drawer in TextMate (or other IDEs) does. speedbar only shows directories, not files, when I navigate dirs in it.

Generally I use vimdiff when working with tests and use it for diffing between the expected output and the real output. It's run in the terminal as opposed to inside my huge emacs process and I don't really know why else I don't use ediff,

Why I still use emacs: I've been using it for 10+ years and my fingers and general workflow are very very used to it. I regularly use vim (for quick editing and vimdiff), but keep coming back. If only emacs had a "project drawer"/"tree draw

Nothing, YAJL got a lot of things very right. We use it in our C daemons for a bunch of things. Not having to unpack the whole JSON into memory is pretty handy.

Far from. In Stockholm, for a child she would have paid 120 SEK (~17 USD) for an ER visit. That is assuming she was a resident or in possesion of an EU/EEC insurance card. Going price for an ER visit without EU insurance would be 1650 SEK (

I'd say it's good for talent since you don't have to pick a startup depending on what benefits you get (vacation time, health insurance, parental leave) due to the government providing well enough to begin with. Of course employers here can

In Sweden you wouldn't get 2.5 months of accrued paid vacation, it's more like 10 days, as the first 120 days (of 480) (pa/)maternal leave is counted towards vacation. Then again you have the legal right to take 25 days of vacation per year
