A lot of problems stated are characteristic of any ORM not just Django. People pick ORMs specifically for trading convenience and tooling with loss of control. Any escape hatches that the ORM provides is by definition hacky. These days when

I used to have this weird thought experiment: what if a front-end is just additional "views" (think of SQL views) of application data, but scoped by say a user or org. UI event handlers are just a way of mutating application data

This. Adding up, front-end engineering has an identity crisis now. A friend of mine is a web dev who started back in the days when Javascript was for form validation. When JS frameworks and SPAs took over the web, he adapted himself. But

I've worked for both types of companies. It's surprising that both cultures work in their own context. At the startup I worked where the dev process was zero, we were able to flesh out pivots and products at a pace that was able t

I work at Zoho. Would like to recommend checking out Zoho One [0]. Zoho One gives everything a business needs (Mail, Office Suite, Accounting, CRM, Chat and more! It's a huge list.) for 30$/user/month. Zoho realized this prob

Learning complicated stuff is a compound process. There’s no framework as such. It takes slow, methodical, frequent look-ups, trying out, dead-ends and everything inconvenient at first. But once we get past a certain stage, it’s more about

SAP always is an interesting case. It gets close to zero love from HN, yet the platform has some interesting engineering. For example, they had their own language that abstracts and operates directly over a database. They had their own drag

Cloud word processors like Zoho Writer & Google Docs already have version comparison features. But this idea of a sliding time traveler for documents is very intuitive! Also Zoho Writer has a combine feature, that lets you upload a docx

A must-read piece for people trying to understand language design theoretics. The paper clearly talks about all the perspectives around the word type , and then discusses the ambiguity in the usage of the term. Was very helpful to decrypt

“Smart-work” > “Hard work” is BS. If you want to get things done, train yourself to do focussed work over a period of time. In developer lingo, be in the zone as much as possible. There’s no smart-work or any other shortcut.

I like how the author acknowledges the problem with the very word "type" - https://www.cs.tufts.edu/~nr/cs257/archive/stephen-kell/in-s... The word "Type" is such an overloaded term,

Yes, "Workflow" has to be one of the most abused word in the industry. People seem to use workflow for all of these things: #1 Business process modeling and automating platforms - Camunda, BPMN, jBPM etc. #2 Assembling together so

While I agree with this, I don’t want to discourage OP. You don’t have to spend 10 years learning the basics before calling yourself a web dev. Learning web dev(or programming in general) is very much like how babies learn to speak. You don

Remember "Worse is Better" by Gabriel? Lisp was a correct, consistent and complete system, prioritizing these over simplicity. C, on the other hand, was a simple system but not nearly as much complete, consistent or correct as
