In a project I did long ago (having nothing to do with a compiler) I was dealing with many text compares and two dozen keywords I heard of 'gperf' before but it wasn't giving me good results so I had to hand write my own solu

That's exactly why I included it. People automatically think inlining is my intention. In reality I avoid templates and not all of my code is in a class. It's short enough to be a candidate for inlining so I put it in a header. I

Yes it's mostly for entertainment. I didn't want to stress anyone out with this. Round 2 was specifically to 1) Show people not to take this seriously 2) To serve as an example that some modifications doesn't mean earlier exa

We'd implemented a few things that aren't useful on its own. For example we haven't implemented opaque types. However now that inlining C code works opaque types are at the top of our list. With opaque types and inlining we&#

I'm the author, although that's 100% true I was going for "our intuition of optimization is bad". Before writing a word I knew that compilers don't inline code that's not in the compile unit (unless `-flto` is

The slides seems like a history talk or a pep talk. I didn't really get anything from it and I wrote a non trivial compiler so I would understand the details. This seems like it'd be a fun talk to listen to. A quick search doesn&#

One constraint C has is its ABI. Bolin compilation model is different (article went up last week) and being constrained by it would be pointless. C allows unsigned variables to wrap, bolin doesn't (not enforced yet, beta is 0.1.0). If

I call `array[0]` the first element. I don't know what you'll think of that. I wonder how many multiples of people who like arguing about starting from 1 vs 0 and how many people were confused for more than a day

It compiles faster than go. Bolin released last week so it's unlikely anyone has heard of it. I had a lot of request to document the language so I'll try to do it one topic at a time. If you reply to this comment I'll try to

Last week Bolin launched so you probably haven't heard of it. I wrote an article on how it compiles. If you reply to this comment I'll try to answer your question. The front page and highlights should give a good summary of what t

I'm thinking more about your suggestion but off the top of my head I don't know why one would want a break reason. If one comes up anytime soon I'll 100% remember this post > I agree but declaring a name for what you retur

I'm not good with this site. Do most people have some kind of notification when someone replies to them? Is the problem with short circuits that you can ignore the error? It's not documented yet but `error return` requires the fun

Are you saying I should write a paper? I'm not sure how much it would help when a lot of it is intricate to the design of the language. I have no idea what the page limit of papers are and what the point would be besides for fun. I nev

Ironically enough I do want people to benchmark Bolin. It's very performant. I didn't want to modify the EULA and accidentally put a hole in it. I'll definitely have a new one when the compiler gets to 1.0 The compiler should

Comparing perl to a language that wants to be readable is very funny to me For me, the problem is when my expression got long or if I call a function with multiple parameters. The more complex the line is the easier it is to not notice the
