It's a good model for someone with minimal skills and/or capital who is willing to hustle. If you have work, then go do it, if you don't have work, be going door to door handing out flyers and talking to potential customers.

It's mostly profit. You have the upfront cost of equipment but then you're just paying for consumables like fuel. Its basically a manual labor job of converting your time and effort into money.

You're well beyond $100k/yr at that point. A single person with a lawn mowing company can make $100k/yr.

Do you think that if you went through the process of creating a $200k/year company that you might pick up on something else that could also make $200k/yr, be it a new product or a way to expand your current one?

My favorite $100k idea to share is starting a landscaping business. The startup cost is small, you grow through hustle and good work, and the ability to expand to multiple employees/crews is there as you expand. I think it's somet

To be fair, this isn't that crazy right now. My large tech company normally has hundreds of job listings and only has two right now due to a hiring freeze.

When I was in graduate school, I printed out hundreds of pages of papers a week. I probably went through a ream of paper a week. I just can't efficiently read on a screen and taking notes on paper is much easier for me.

I would do this, but have it redirect to the original site. You could even add canonical tags in the head section so that Google sees it as a duplicate copy of the original site and doesn't index it. This basically makes their site not

I understand the need for subscription software. I would never push a developer to sell something with a one-time payment, especially if that software requires servers or will have future updates. I like the idea of a monthly subscription.

It's really difficult getting hundreds or thousands of people working together. Tooling, communication, etc become really critical. Otherwise, it's just chaos. As a result, you spend a lot less time "actually working" an

Large companies don't make engineering decisions based on the most elegant systems or best performance. They prioritize business needs to maximize revenue and growth. Having 1000 RPC calls that take several seconds might be horrible de

From what I hear, more experienced contractors will often inflate their hours instead of charging more per hour. Apparently people will happily pay $100/hr for 3 hours of work, but not $300/hr for 1 of work from a more experienced

I use it for two things 1) Zooming in on something like a map. The pinch gesture is very natural. 2) I run a CNC operating program that has a touch interface so I use the touch screen for that.

I think a big part of it is cultural. Java is a great language with tons of supporting frameworks, build systems, etc. But it's mostly geared towards larger enterprise companies. For a startup that is trying to be quick and nimble to g

I just stumbled upon this game and I'm having a blast playing it. I used to love coding assembly on old CPUS with limited resources. This game absolutely scratches that same itch.

Firebase is a great solution but... It's closed source and locks you into Google Cloud. You can't self host. And since it's pay for use, you can end up with large unexpected bills for a variety of reasons. It doesn't hav

Being a junior developer. You'll get paid pretty well and only have a few meetings a week. Most of your time will be coding your own work.

Being extroverted is absolutely a useful skill for certain things. Extroverts are going to talk to more people, which is going to make them better at networking and self promotion. Those things lead to making more connections, getting busin

This is pretty standard in the industry. I've been getting emails from Datadog for years. Not saying it's a good practice, but this is nothing new. This strategy must work because tons of successful companies do it.

This is really cool. Ffmpeg is really suited for this type of visual programming flow. Is this code open source? I could use something like this in one of my own projects.

I tried this for a while. It was definitely a functional computer. What bothered me and made me buy a $300 mini PC instead was how long it took Chrome to render a website. On a normal computer, it's basically instant. On the Pi, it too

Aren't you spending a lot of money downloading the database through Realtime Database though? How does that compare to the cost of the built in backup?

Isn't it easier and cheaper to download the backup from GCS than to pull data from Realtime Database?

I think the author has a fundamental misunderstanding of how the built in backups work. The backup likely goes into Google Cloud Storage which is relatively cheap.

What you are experiencing is not normal development culture. It is common, yes, but normal or healthy. It sounds like you're working with a bunch of workaholics who don't mind working outside normal hours and built a company cultu
