This is only true for arb opportunities on exchanges that offer colocation (which leaves almost all crypto exchanges as fair game). But if you can't get colocation, there isn't much point in having the FPGA anyway since the networ

The reason for this is that chemical reaction rates are temperature dependent, and cold blooded animals need different systems of chemicals/proteins to keep them operating over significantly different temperatures. I wonder to what deg

Homeowners still make up the majority of voters by a pretty significant margin [0]. And one could argue that immigration is related, which is a serious problem in Canada, whereas there are much better solutions than curbing immigration in t

Individuals can and do make non-financially motivated decisions. But in larger groups, especially a large corporation like J&J, you can apply the law of large numbers and determine that decisions are a result of incentives (primarily mo

I used it in production for a while, but it caused instability with pandas and often froze so I had to take it out. It does have some serious speed benefits for simple / pure-Python without compiled libraries.

For most places, it makes sense that there needs to be shelter spaces available in order to relocate a person. But in reality, there are certain homeless meccas that are much more attractive to homeless people, where the local government ca

You could say the same thing about most HN users' software jobs, but then upon deeper inspection, you would realize: oh, there's a value here (however slight), which is why people are getting paid for it. Impacts of HFT on society

Couldn't find anything in the article about whether these still require gel (or if the gel is an absolute requirement for the conventional ones). Anyone know?

Steens mountain is one of my favorite places I've visited. I found it when I was young by just looking at maps for what seemed like the most remote area I could drive to. Unfortunately it was humid in the summer when I went and the sta

I always thought Saylor's liquidation would be the perfect reversal signal during the last bear market, but alas, it was FTX, and Saylor survived. Of course, it's plausible that he'll take out some massive loans to buy Bitcoi

Not sure why you're being downvoted, but a carbon tax is a little too elegant to expect from a modern politician. This is far messier and more arbitrary. And just one of numerous proposed changes (the linked page is only tangentially a

Not from the UK, but such bullying stereotypes seem to be overblown in US media. I'm not saying they don't happen, but Hollywood seems to show some violent bullying happening to virtually every male teen protagonist. During my chi

While I'd agree that the article itself is mediocre, it does list all its sources, which seem perfectly valid. This is just a shallow dismissal and an appeal to authority. It irks me how some people think it's impossible to have e

The point that some people miss here is that it doesn't matter. If you are going to die from ALS in 2 years, are you going to feel satisfied when the FDA says "we won't let you try this; it probably won't cure you"?

Someone close to me has ALS and their only options seem to be in Mexico and China, not anywhere in the US. From their research, it definitely seems like the FDA is the big bad not only in preventing treatments as a default, but also by disi

IMO the problem is not that ads are better targeted, but the fact that they exist at all on the OS (let alone an OS I paid money for). Microsoft is truly cancer.

As with all gig economy services, do your due diligence with the user ratings, etc. Whether it is cheaper depends on the area, but that definitely isn't the selling point for me. The selling point is not having to stand in line at the

While I imagine building knowledge of sources into the model itself is no trivial task, it would be so easy to search the training data against the output of the model to generate references.
