IIRC there was an analysis done by the New York Times which showed that it was much, much cheaper for them to ship a free Kindle to subscribers than to print and ship them the physical paper for 6 months. Unfortunately the experience of rea

Exactly. For me, the saving grace of Amazon's mobi format is that it's easy to strip the DRM off. I would never buy so many ebooks were that not the case. I generally immediately return Topaz books if I slip up and actually buy one.

And why does this answer blow it open? It seems like a slightly reactionary response to a pretty reasonable question to me. I don't think anyone's in any doubt that purely functional programs simply aren't used in large systems, for most de

As an aside, Ridiculous Fish, apart from the excellent name, is one of the best blogs I know - interesting topics, good scientific method proving his conclusions, and a great writing style. I wish he posted more.

As an interesting counterpoint, Paul Tyma has a really excellent presentation on how NIO in Java actually allows considerably less throughput than thread-per-connection and has a much more complicated programming model: http://paultyma.blo

This article fails to mention the main benefit of final - it gives you much stricter guarantees for concurrency under the Java Memory Model. If you create an immutable object and the fields are final, you can immediately pass the object to

It's worth noting that this doesn't actually provide an immutable collection, it provides an immutable view of an existing one. If some other code has a reference to the underlying collection it can still be mutated. However this works well

I believe it does however mean that your application code has to be GPLv2, and thus can't be linked to code using some popular licenses, for example Apache 2.0.

It's Java - see: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=639899&p... http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61093 For some previous attempts to hack apps together. It uses a modified AWT for display. The problem h

Fair enough, although it's a much more graphic illustration of the problem actually seeing the results (rather than simply "your site isn't very secure", "your front door lock is a bit loose"). I know it made much more impact on me than it

"he's pressured Stephen & his webmaster to immediately fix this hole or risk a much worse attack on his site." Surely that's a good thing? I agree that Stephen would/will probably be offended (assuming he wasn't notified), but he'll cer

I believe what the script is actually doing is extracting the Mobipocket PID - K4PC uses a different PID for each book.

Actually, K4PC uses a different scheme - the book key is not encrypted in the same way as for normal kindle books. I believe each book uses a different Mobipocket PID, and what this new script does is extract the PID for a particular book a

+1 - I use a 30" monitor at work, half the screen is too much. But I'd love to be able to split it into thirds, with the top target area being the middle third.

From a user's point of view, Moneybookers is truly, truly awful. I couldn't use PayPal for a while because I had to change my account country, and I was forced to use MoneyBookers to add money to my Skype account. Suffice to say that I will

A few years ago, a friend of mine and I were DJing a lot. Just when CDs were coming in and people were starting to accept that DJs might not use only vinyl forever, we considered starting a website to sell electronic music digitally. At the
