I'm not sure if I would rather use a jQuery (or something similar) plugin or this method to do notifications. It seems using a jQuery plugin would be easier if I already had lots of AJAX and DOM events going on.

This seems like a great deal for Google. I mean, depending on how long the $1 Billion gets them the default search spot for, I am certain they will make the money back through ads in the near future.

This does not seem like a good idea. Redis does not serve the same use-cases that MySQL aims to.

More people would use HTTPS if self-signed certificates weren't something that scared users into leaving and SSL certificates were cheaper. You can get one for around $10 a year, but that's still not free.

Most animation designers couldn't do this well in flash or something similar! Incredibly well-done.
