8:53 wake up. Hung over. Again. Meeting's in 7 minutes. Start a pot of coffee. Stumble back to the desk. 9:01 answer the Skype call, offer a quick "I'm here" before switching to mute so they won't hear the sounds of coffee brewing, much les

It's prettier. And it shows parameter expansion in some cases I think. And some day it will have some fancy-ass version of narrow-to-tag (which actually does sound like a real step forward).

Not enough. "I don't use always use vim, but when I do" I enter insert mode in all kinds of ways that are mostly never just i. Usually c and a movement. I'd rather just have one switch that did esc when I hit it.

It would be nice if disqus would detect these things and send a static HTML thing with "allow us in noscript to join the discussion!" and maybe a static view of the thread so far.

All three are extremely good for this use case, when the competition is SHA-1. Beyond that, I don't know enough to compare the three. So yeah, it came out of my butt. If Colin has a paper on it then I trust his comparison. What I really

Pbkdf2 is extremely good. Without deeper analysis (or a feature comparison) I'd be hesitant to say that bcrypt or scrypt are better.

I doubt that inequality amounts to much. Outside of the tech crowd, if you have cable internet, you pretty much have cable TV. Their salespeople are relentless, and most people [in the US] really really really really like TV anyway.

I'm getting tired of people having opinions about what other people should learn. If you think you will like messing with computers, give it a shot. If you like it, maybe you'll work hard and get good. If not, you'll probably do something e

Linear with respect to your budget. The post is correct, that putting consumption on top gives a better "feel" for how much money you'll save.

I said most secondary indexes are high entropy . If you have a large enough data set that you have to do a leaf read per insert (or close to that often), it will kill your throughput.

This argument does not hold up to analysis. You can break it just by making your data set larger.

"and if there's enough data, the relevant b-tree pages will most certainly be hot" That is not the case if you have indexes. Most secondary indexes are high-entropy (if they weren't, you probably wouldn't be storing them, is an emotional pr

The upside to calling free() is that it is a valuable lesson in understanding memory lifetimes for a beginner programmer. You can't know when it's good to omit free until you know what it means.
