You can use alpine and mutt just fine with remote imap and smtp, including gmail. It's not hard. Apart from "they look old" (which is a fake argument), what about console mail clients makes them feel as though they aren't designed for the

Don't. Do one thing and do it well. If your startup is racing against another company toward a release date, you're going to lose if you can't focus on it 100%. If not, put the startup on hold until you finish school.

What's the problem with Android 2.2 on the Eris? All it says is "No upgrade available", this is pretty ambiguous. Do you mean that there is no upgrade to 2.2 on the Eris and that's the problem? There are 2.2 roms that run on it (I'm runn

The deb version is different from the internal version. The debs are just wrappers, the important binaries get downloaded to ~/.dropbox-dist, and those are auto-updated. If you want to force an auto-update, do this: $ dropbox stop

This was a concept back around 2004 or so called "googlewhacking". The goal was to form a search query of only two words that had exactly one hit on google.

I recall the first interesting example usage my professor taught of dynamic programming was this example (well, described, not taught). He basically just said that all you do is take the L^2 or L^3 sum of extra space and minimize it using

You're right, of course, that you should never use user-input data as code. SQL bind parameters solve this problem for SQL. I'm sure there exist other things without such an easy solution, in which case you do need to sanitize with a whit

There are other ways of gaining remote access. This is a pretty well-constructed local DoS attack you can run (without root access, I think!). Attacks can take many forms, most new attacks are single components that one would combine to pe

This is tangential, but I've found that ruby's non-standard libs have, for the most part, been horribly named. Recall from the article: curb, nokogiri, syck, psych, home_run. Others: sinatra, rack, thin, unicorn, maruku. None of these gi

A dead NFS server can also stall a local desktop. This was a huge issue at Google, where homedirs are mounted on NFS. Turns out almost all window managers need frequent access to dotfiles or they will freeze. This is stupid.

As already noted, commands that deal with a lot of data will copy that data to your machine to process, and copy it back. This is a drawback of both NFS and sshfs. NFS, however, doesn't encrypt, while sshfs does, so if you don't care about

Well, the way ubuntu does it is they customize their packages and put them in the tag for the next release. Presumably, this means they'll just put them in the stable release repositories instead.
