Backend developer here. Most (non FAANG) sites are a mess because they're made by inexperienced developers turning everything they touch into a tangled slow mess. The process goes like this: - Devs ditch the legacy (often monolithic) c

Programming is fun, but learning to program from zero is boring. And that's partly because the way it's being lectured. Learning to program it's like learning to speak a new language. And learning a new language is boring whe

Weird, I installed Asahi on my M1 Pro and while the two finger scroll isn't butty smooth as MacOS, it works well enough and already better than in any Thinkpad touchpad.

I bought an M1 Pro a month ago. While I kinda miss linux, I do not miss x86 at all. Seriously, going back from a performant arm64 to x86 feels like going back to the POWER architecture all over again. Big bloated chips where every little co

For that you have the "closed for modification but open for extension" principle. If the server is new and fresh, yeah it's ok to assume the payload of a request will be a JSON object with some required fields, but leave the

The focus should be readability of code while respecting abstractions and design patterns. I prefer some duplicate lines over having to go back and forth over some source files only because some developers think that less code is better cod

Commercial FOSS software is in a weird situation The code is open, so anyone can compile it for free, and when enough people care, any of them with a bit of free time is permitted to distribute builds, like people do for Ungoogled Chromium.

Robert C Martin's book about software architecture made a point about the fleeting nature of software as a product. Time goes on, business changes and computers become faster. At some point, many developers started to see features like

If you build your own house maybe you can. And then run an access point and a repeater for 4g, like LTT did

I think the "if-else nightmare logic" caused some non-friendly answers over there but I get your idea. I don't entirely agree with the end user being the root of all, at least in FOSS. While they shouldn't be alienated,

That's what I said. It was a barely working product, but it was accessible enough to other developers to develop on it and extend it.

No offense, but I think that's the problem with our approach to browsers. People want the shortest route to deliver an open source chrome that's not chrome. And Chrome won. That's it. Even Firefox, an amazing feat of engineer

Then let that user use Chrome and be happy with it. If the average user wants to lean to a corporation and use its product because on the reliability it offers then that's fine. While the privacy concerns are there, I don't think

People focus too much on Google Chrome, and when they read "Open Source Browser" they instantly think of competing with Chrome. Google Chrome is a product. But a new browser doesn't have to be a product. And doesn't have

My thoughts exactly. If Linux could, I don't see why a new browser can't. If we start slowly, focus not on delivering a working product ASAP but a nice codebase that's accessible for other developers to read, carefully split

As a web developer, I'm kinda jealous of how someone can just say "I'm gonna make this device this specific nostalgic game I love" and then just do it. How do people do that?
