On a totally unrelated note, that may be the best restaurant website I've ever seen. Just gave me the facts, no Flash, I could see the menu and it works fine on a mobile phone. I wish all other restaurants would copy this template.

Wouldn't a functional test have caught this better? Ideally a unit test would use mock objects for all external resources, so it probably wouldn't have caught this. A full end to end functional test would have.

You have an old "feature phone" (old Nokia phones, for example) that can still text just fine, but not run more modern apps. This is a perfect application for that.

Definitely. A good middle ground is for companies to open source tools and side programs they write that make their work easier. Many other developers would probably derive benefit from them, and who knows, it could turn into another stream

The best example of that is a website. It provides links to other documents. It just happens to be that the output is usually HTML, but there's no reason why JSON or XML can't contain links to other hypermedia as well.
