What amazed me reading the report was just how vulnerable the ship was to sinking if it had a list during a storm. While an 18 degree list is extreme it's not unforeseeable in a serious emergency. The problem was this put ventilation o

IIRC the windows team has been in the process of cleaning up the NT Kernel for awhile (since vista at least) with the clear goal of getting NT back to "Dave Cutler's NT". The visible bits of this are the Server Micro project

When I get time I might actually debug this to see what's going on. I'm quite curious what happens when you access the pointer again. If the Kernel really is remapping the pages again as the anecdotes from Raymond would suggest it

IIRC this isn't a bug but a compatibility hack. The pages really are unmapped in your process but if you try to access them the kernel will remap them for you and lie when you try to remap that file (as it already had the handle open a

You can actually control most of this using an application manifest. The advantage being you can prevent any non-"known" dll from loading from any folder it's not supposed to. Moreover you can ensure that it's embedded i

Legally it's supposed to be the other way around, but not all railroads give way. Many just take the fine that Amtrak levies on them and shrug.

I would not be surprised to see MS introduce a dockerized '16bit compatibility' mode for Enterprise versions of windows. The only reason 32bit windows is still around is to support 16bit apps for these companies.

Inferences from https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20081020-00/?p=... . I also know that 32bit programs could load 16bit modules without issue. In fact that was one of the things that MS was harping on p

IIRC 16bit code on a 32bit version of windows runs in 32bit mode with some thunking for selectors. The issue is more that HANDLEs can have values up to half the sizeof(HANDLE) and supporting 16bit would have significantly harmed the value o

BitBlt is done in DMA ram by the CPU, so it may be even worse than just a copy as there is likely a wait involved too to prevent shared access. Using DMA ram prohibits the GPU/Driver from doing optimizations on that ram that it could d

I'd be curious to see message traces and UMAPC (user mode asynchronous procedure calls) traces of this between the two. My hypothesis is that Win10 does quite a bit more in UMAPCs than win7 does in the interests of keeping the system &
