I've heard picking a lot of high numbers is a better strategy than picking pseudo-random numbers. The logic is, sharing the prize greatly hurts the expected value (when N people win with the same numbers, they split the jackpot 1/

The comments from Senator Liz Krueger buried in the third section are very interesting and I almost missed it! Unlike most articles blindly debating the pros and cons of the sharing economy, Krueger claims many hosts are professionals who a

Very cool, is that documented somewhere by any chance? I've noticed the same, the only time I can ever "keep up" with the green lights on my folding Dahon is on 5th ave, the very down-hill portion from 40th street to about 23rd. There are s

I think Symmetry and I might recall the same event, in April 2003; a shooting near Random Hall that resulted in death (not a student). http://tech.mit.edu/V123/N17/17shooting.17n.html The worst part is it happened during pre-frosh weekend

I believe 2004 was the turning point when the audience was very engaged -- that was the first year spectating was lots of fun, 34-101 was packed, cheering all around, etc. In 2001 and 2002, spectating was not fun at all, partly due to techn

Now I feel old! I participated in the first two Battlecode's ever, but that was back when it was simply 6.370. The first year was a board game and we stared at ASCII graphics all IAP long. By my M.Eng year, Aaron Iba and co. turned everyt

As documented in Mike Grynbaum's NY Times article, the five taxis probably weren't lying about the shift change. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/12/nyregion/12taxi.html It seems irrational at first, but changing shifts at the same time mak

Wasn't Jeff Bezos a fairly senior and well-respected quant at D. E. Shaw just before founding Amazon? I would guess he would have had a fairly easy time raising money purely for capital purposes. Maybe he was strategically trying to get no

Each time you get a new article you get a spike, and then a downturn, but each one leaves your baseline higher. Now we get many times the traffic we got in a spike at announcement every day. I've noticed this higher baseline

Funny, that's exactly what I thought 3 years ago... I think the root of the problem is there are too many available apartments but most of them are a waste of your time to view. A great broker previews every listing and only shows the best

Hey, this is Lee from RentHop. One thing that isn't very clear from the writeup: we went through a LONG trough of sorrow before finding our current pivot. That's a story for another day...

"Save Padmapper" seems to be selling the company short given the diverse set of data sources and partnerships they have. I hope Craigslist comes around but my bet is PadMapper will be more than fine regardless.

I was Summer intern at Microsoft in 2001 and back then the interns went to Bill Gates's house for a bbq near the end of the Summer. One of the interns asked "what other names did you think of before coming up with .NET?" To the best of my

Hi there, I'm one of the RentHop founders. For now we had to seed our initial reputation using priors from our data partners and our NYC models. We'll be sure our scoring gets smarter and better fit to Boston over time.

I'll admit I'm never a huge fan of other founders asking me how my startup is going as a conversation starter. There are often three scenarios: 1.) Nothing new or exciting has happened since last time, in which case I feel pretty crappy.
