Delphi was, and Lazarus is, amazingly well designed. Lazarus comes pretty close to a Swiss army GUI tool, and once you get to know it a little better, Object Pascal is actually a very nice language that rivals C++ (!) in power. It's st

mcedit, the editor of mc, is a nice DOS-like editor, complete with blue background and pulldown menus. The mc suite contains a simple but powerful hex editor, too.

I still fire up my trusty old Win2k VM from time to time. Fast, stable, simple, intuitive. Along with Delphi 7 it's incredible how productive we used to be some 15 years ago. Documentation was sooo good back then.

Especially SQLite is often overlooked. A marvelous library that should be part of every personal toolkit.

Don't mind at all. ATM we're using a simple VMWare server backing up the virtual HDD every night, with a dirty hack thrown in (no full backups on weekends as that's when the bigger jobs run, so I dump the current day to a CSV

We use a combination of SQLite and a sharding frontend service. One SQLite database file per device, one table per sensor, table contents are timestamp and measured value. As simple as it gets, easy to scale, and damn fast. But try telling

Taking iodine would be useless after two weeks. On the contrary, that would make future problems with your thyroid more probable, so don't do that. Iodine shouldn't be taken at all if you're more than ~45 years old (as a reme

YMMV, but my experiences with SBCL were way better than with Go. Using Hunchentoot and the other Quicklisp libraries made developing fun again. With Go I had to constantly worry about errors, repeat the same code snippets over and over ag

I'd go for Mint. The only system that never disappointed me and always just worked. Second place would go to Debian "stable", old (== problems with Wifi) but rock solid.

Try to get your hands on an old copy of Delphi 1 or 2. Thousands of pages of documentation in PDF format. Docs used to be so much better back then, it's sad. I still have a copy of Delphi 7 lying around just because the help system was

The one thing Delphi really did wrong was to make GUI programming too easy. It was just too simple, too tempting, to just put all your code into your MainForm.pas, making it grow to over 10'000 LOC. If (and only if) the programmers too

For a nice Delphi alternative, try Lazarus ( http://www.lazarus-ide.org/ ). Like Delphi 7, but with more features. Documentation could be better though.

The main difference is graphics vs text. While bitmaps won't profit from a better resolution, text will. Sharper letters, no more blurring around the edges. It's a big difference in readability.
