I’m pleased to report that TFA is unrelated to AI.

That sounds more like a new feature than a bugfix, however. That aside, I didn’t claim that it would necessarily be more compact, just that it’s possible. Any change can be described in prose, to whatever level is necessary to get the essen

You’re not the only one. Good technical writing is like balm for the soul. Or maybe chicken soup for the soul. It presents a clear thought process, leading from confirming a shared context to lucidly teaching you new things while explaining

You can still tell them how you did it, just not in the form of code/patches. You should be able to describe it in prose so that the maintainer understands your solution approach.

Mathematicians use inconsistent notations all the time. Symbols meaning slightly different things based on the type of the arguments are among the benign cases. For the present case, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ve

In my post the sequence is: 1. Mis-transcode Windows-1252 as ISO 8859-1 to UTF-8. 2. Mis-decode UTF-8 as Windows-1252.

The page is declared as ISO 8859-1, but the actual bytes of the text appear to be UTF-8. In UTF-8, characters from U+0080 to U+00AF happen to be encoded as C2 <codepoint value>. For example, U+0092 is encoded as C2 92. C2 in ISO 8859-

By definition, internal experience is something you perceive, and what you perceive informs how you act. Therefore internal experience affects outward physical action.

I was reacting to the parent post as well, suggesting that they should have used “fundamental” rather than “low-level”, and that “fundamental” would also match the article picture.

Internal experience is an input to your mind (that’s how you know about it), and what your mind perceives affects what it does. The better question is: how can what you experience possibly not affect your actions?

We have virtually no idea how consciousness arises in the human brain. Furthermore, what is “natural” supposed mean here, and why should it matter for consciousness whether some prerequisite arises naturally or not?

There’s the saying that we overestimate what we can achieve in the short term, but underestimate what we can achieve in the long term. Optimizing for the short term is therefore counterproductive if it impairs us for the long term.

It lets us consider the relativity of viewpoints. The point of the original isn’t just how humans might be viewed from the perspective of aliens. It’s that the apparent strangeness of something depends on the viewpoint and on expectations.

An LLM’s training could be seen as lived experience, and the fact that LLMs can output long sequences from their training material can be interpreted as them remembering those parts. Also, how does that relate to consciousness? I don’t thin

True, but I don’t see how that relates to consciousness. An LLM being continuously RLHF-trained also changes its habits; that alone doesn’t make it conscious.
