It sucks that Firefox 4 won't have sockets because of transparent proxies. I feel like that's sort of an edge security case just cause those proxies can't be that popular, but then again I might just be ignorant of something. I am actually

I agree that lolcats, in and of themselves, are useless, but to say they do not have any cultural significance is a very big assumption. Don't you think that the popularity of such a meaningless meme is representative of some undiagnosed is

It's funny how defensive your comment makes me feel. Probably because there is a bit more truth to it than I would like.

On a slight tangent, I really love Google simply because they are a search engine. I mean how easy is it for us to start using Bing? We could do it instantaneously. Google could easily start hemorrhaging users, and every day their engineers

I don't think this author can be all that fair. If he had trouble wrapping his head around manual memory management, how far could he have gone in iPhone development?

I still find the fact that level 3 decided to pay comcast the most disturbing. I do not understand the long-term financial benefit of that decision in any way.

Well, I was talking out of my ass then. I was under the impression that places that had a large set of ip's (such as a few universities and corporations) would make a bundle leasing those to other people when there was more contention for a

I have always been under the impression that the limited nature of ipv4 is very detrimental for creating infrastructure in poor parts of the world. This might actually make large corporations (and more so governments) interested in preventi

I think twitter would fit with google because they can leap any privacy concerns. After the buzz fiasco and the reaction to the facebook privacy changes a public social network like twitter might be more valuable than it seems.

I think the biggest problem is only sharing information with specific people. Everyone is too lazy to do it manually and I don't think we are anywhere near creating a working suggestion method.

It's not link-baiting when you release an article about poll-results with < 50% reporting, right? Kind of sad for the atlantic. http://elections.nytimes.com/2010/results/california

A lot of companies have to pay an 'Android tax' to Microsoft in order to prevent litigation. HTC paid Microsoft off in order to not be sued[1], Samsung and LG cut a deal that included exchanging patents[2][3], and Motorola decided to fight[

Sorry to nit-pick, to my knowledge point #3 isn't entirely true. Google doesn't get a cut from the app sales (at least to my knowledge). I thought it all went to the carriers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_Market#Priced_applicati...

I love how google constantly contributes to the entire internet community in spite of the lack of immediate returns. I mean it takes some serious cojones to bet on the long term with stuff like this. I really hope companies start following

This has to be the most cheapskate move I have ever seen. Drive manufacturers have been tricking customers with base 10 forever, and now Apple decided to get on board too? What a rotten move. I think a move like this clearly shows the respe

This article is great and I hope to see many more like it on hacker news. I know most people hate the goldfish tendency of most social networks to go through "forgotten" articles, but stuff like this needs to be brought up. Long and interes

Did you read the article? This is not about war per-say. It is about how the brain reacts to any emotion (horrors of war is only an example). I agree that many soldiers have been given "raw deals" in the recent wars, and that it is the duty

This article hints at something I find quite provocative; the idea that the culture of the 1950's somehow was more open to the truth then the present is an amazing thesis. I entirely agree with the author (malcolm gladwell) in that the simp
