This isn't anti-Hacker News. I really love the site and read it every day and try to contribute as much as I can, but I find the dynamic of which posts get elevated very interesting. I assume HN favors long-time users who have posted a lot

This has raised a lot of discussion here in the NW about Cascadia fault line, which runs off the coast and causes an 8.0 or higher earthquake about every 250 years. It has been 311 years since the last one.

This is a beautiful piece of link bait. His advice might make sense if you live in New York, but it doesn't work at all in most places in the country. If you live in the suburbs you can't find places to rent. If you have kids and care about

I'll miss Josh's writing for one. Always enjoyed his articles even if I didn't always agree with him. Hope he surfaces again soon. Keep writing, Josh!

I'm blown away by this. I lived through those days as a Windows Mobile and Palm developer and had this weird feeling of deja-vu when the Nokia-MS news broke. Now I know why!

Elegant devices, seamless integration, simplicity -- what Apple's ads are all about today -- are brand advertising. That is the brand's promise and differentiation wrapped up in one tidy package.

Toshiba and Lenova, yes. Dell has no channel expertise except through their site. The problem with tablets is they are not a cookie cutter device. Dell could sell PCs off the web because one PC was like every other PC with a different logo

As I commented on his post, the net effect is that Android and Windows Phone licensees, whose main experience is selling through carriers, will struggle with tablets. It is hard to build channel expertise. Apple and HP have a ton of it. Sam

My guess is the company knows how bad the situation is and is trying to build a growing developer community around its devices... by making Android software run on them. I can't figure out why else RIM would do this?

Thought I would share my RIM experience. We were pressed hard by RIM developer relation team in 2006/2007 to port our highly successful Palm/WinMo app to their platform. The pitch at the time was for their developer program and attending WE

It is not that they couldn't -- although the priests may not have been able to -- it's that there was no reason to. It's not like there were millions of Christians in the year 1. The Jews were very busy dealing with the Romans and not too w

I am late to this conversation and Fred already posted a follow up but I wanted to just add that this is not Fred's normal voice. He is upset about something. When usually his posts are very open and constructive, this one was bitter.

#1 is a big disadvantage. Those devices are all locked down by IT staff and software won't install. RIM is a tricky platform. I found that the market is split mostly between consumers who text and corporate/government employees who have the

As an old Palm OS developer and someone who wrote code for BlackBerry OS, I can tell you that BlackBerry is much much much much worse than Palm OS ever was.

That's pretty cool. This could work in mobile but Apple's review process kills it there and the monitoring part is hard. App stores, though, make this possible. I wish Apple would allow a post-review oath for trusted developers, those who h

A strong Nokia is good for smart phones. I hope Elop is smart and doesn't get bogged down in the tablet fight. Nokia needs to focus on doing smart phones well. Plenty of market there as 6 billion people will be buyers.
