For me, the killer feature is DDG's solid keyboard navigation of search results. Google's never worked properly and they eventually removed it.

I'm very pleased with it for mild news reading, email, youtube, netflix, podcasts, music, and a few simple apps. The good: Great speaker, nice design, feels sturdy, always up to date with Android one, and no vendor crapware. The averag

I don't think thread prioritization is the cause of the apparent lag. We've gone from mostly synchronous systems to highly asynchronous systems. Typing on a keyboard used to be a hardware interrupt that would also print instantly

Several things have been removed from C++, including auto_ptr, exception specifications, unary/binary_functions, trigraphs.

For toy programs you are correct, but Rust guarantees way more than Go in terms of correctness. If you need to reason about, implement and debug such correctness, I don't think the difference is a factor 4. In fact, Rust's proposi

It amazes me that FIGlet are still releasing for MS-DOS, Acorn, OS/2 and Amiga in 2014.

I occurs to me that being unfulfilled with what you are currently doing is what leads to mind wandering and unhappiness, rather than mind wandering itself being the cause of unhappiness. Mind wandering is a signal that you aren't havin

The Great Belt Power Link (DC) in Denmark wasn't built until 2009/2010 to simply reduce price variability between east and west. Sjælland is close to Sweden and the rest of Denmark is easily connected to Germany, so early interlin

A couple of articles, that I found previously here on HN address this exact self-perpetuating downward spiral of mistrust. https://hbr.org/1998/03/the-set-up-to-fail-syndrome https://sites.insead.edu&#x

Level three definitely exists, and it's useful to be able to talk about levels of correctness. That doesn't mean it's always required to be level 3 correct. That entirely depends on your risk profile. If you're doing a o

The biases are real, but readability is perhaps less of an ultimate concern than maintainability and reusability. Both of these depend on the ability of yourself (and others) being able to understand and adapt the code. A bit of foresight i

That helps, but is not bullet proof. Changes to optimization passes can cause warnings to be emitted in cases where they weren't previously. For example, detection of an unused result of an expression.

Yes, but you need the password then. With admin priviledges you can run "as admin" without needing to know the password. The privileged account still runs programs in normal mode (unprivileged), but can launch programs with elevat

But it's extremely cumbersome from the CLI. RunAs always asks for password for the Administrator account (not the account for the delegated account like sudo). I have admin access to my work PC, but not the Administrator password (sinc

Packages go to the 'testing' repository to allow checking for thing being broken. They usually only stay there for a short time (a week or so, often less).

For me it's the easy of keeping up to date with the latest-and-greatest versions of packages too (NodeJS, GCC, CMake, etc.). The latest Ubuntu/Debian typically gives you TWO YEAR OLD versions of common software. Upgrading packages

Shared state between different parts of the code sounds an awful lot like something that could be a class.

I doubt that this model is sustainable. In Denmark, the tax exemption on electric vehicles is now being phased out because it got too popular and the resulting decrease in tax revenue would be to heavy.
