Sitting in the data science seat, downstream from the application development and trying to gain insights on production data, I completely second this approach. It just gives you more to go on and more ways to validate whether something une

Less people in dense Manhattan offices will reduce the value of the real estate. Presumably if it's a long term trend then more of it will convert to be residential. This would bring less people by day than full offices, but probably m

Here's a full example I wrote in Prolog for doing small scale sysadmin: https://github.com/larsyencken/marelle It mixes logic programming as imperative programming, with more logicky features like facts and rules.

Prolog feels like imperative programming, but with a special kind of depth first search through options built-in to the language. Mercury feels like a functional language, but with the same depth-first search built-in. I like some of the se

Of course, for any prolog program of significant size, you want nearly all of it to be moded and deterministic anyway, and not leave choice points all over the shop.

That’s unfortunately not my experience from observing other engineers. Many get stuck at a “good enough” level with their tools and never seem to learn the shortcuts which would allow them to code and edit faster.

I’m all for dual citizenships, but a downside nobody’s talking about is that you have to spend 5-10 years of your life in your new country to get it, not factoring in multi-year waiting times that may exist for processing citizenship. Essen

I find their poor recommendations the most obvious issue here. They have so, so much reading data on me, even a massive list of books I'm interested in, but they are still so off.

Sometimes it’s hard to be the kind of person we want to be for people we really care about. One way of showing you care is making the effort to remember important things. Another is staying in contact. I’ve used Anki to remember friends kid

The cost for a taxi is way less reliable, and harder to dispute. It's a common but unpleasant way to arrive to a new city to realise you've been shafted on the taxi fare.

I have to agree wholeheartedly. Learning vim is quite painful, but it keeps paying off for years, even if you choose to use modern editors with vim bindings. The speed of these bindings for navigating and editing code is really unrivalled.

I can acknowledge that some settings exist where you might want a strict audit log, where you have pre-agreed the rules and legal requirements, and must stick to them. I don't believe most software development work requires such a stri
