I work from home for a company that is 100% remote (even the local guy) with all of its 60+ employees (almost entirely developers). We basically just work regular hours like any normal job, except no commute. Seems to work very well (at lea

Well, when both Vista and 7 came out, Microsoft would tout the great adoption rates they were seeing with their sales numbers. They would conveniently leave out that purchasing a PC with XP on it at that point involved buying Vista/7, and t

Very nice. I thought the 4 stripes on top were actually windows, though (since you can see through them in the movie, such as in this photo I found: http://media.photobucket.com/image/recent/ThePropDen/cee7e16... )

My guide app was recently rejected for being "simply a book." Seriously. There's actually a "Books" section of the App Store (it's the first one, no less!). My only recourse? Publish it on iBooks, which requires an ISBN. Also, I've never me

Ha! Switzerland came up last time I made that point. I actually don't know what you missed, if anything. I came to your article having never heard of any of the players in the BaaS scene (besides Azure). I left with the impression that ever

That table makes me cringe: "Azure" vs "BaaS Players" Are we comparing Azure to ALL of the startups in the scene? What about features that one has but others don't. Is there even one service that the "BaaS Players" column completely and acc

1) Depending on writing games for your income is foolish. Very few people make real money from games. 2) In-App Purchases come in 2 flavors: The kind that are permanent, and the kind that aren't. Apple doesn't tell you which one you are b

Installing software has no consistency. The built-in terminal is basically broken: -page-up and page-down don't work unless you hold shift -It uses CTRL-C instead of Command-C, unlike the rest of the OS. -I still can't find hotkeys to jump

I disagree with all of your first sentence. As a full-time Linux/Django and iOS developer, switching over to the Mac from Ubuntu is f'ing painful . Linux's reputation is far worse than it deserves.

The biggest problem I see is: who the heck would expect a .12 release to break compatibility in an ancient and solid piece of software?

I hope this continues, and I hope it gets worse. That way the politicians get to see how stupid the process really is, and to see that the big content companies aren't their friends.

No mention of the fact that a bunch of games on Steam already have Linux versions? Or do their blogs usually ignore non-Valve software?

"There's no UI better than one you already know, and no UI worse than one you thought you knew but now haver to relearn." This just isn't true. In a web browser, sure, the UI barely matters. Going through the menus in Firefox or Chrome is r

I actually am a full-time Django developer (pip and virtualenv included), and I hate PHP. But if, say, I want to try out a new JS library or widget, I'm pretty likely to just throw a PHP script in my webroot and use that, instead of firing

The TRUE problem with PHP is that you can prototype extremely fast in it, and then you are stuck in PHP. Django and the like have a lot of setup time to really get started, even if after a few hours into it you're already saving time compar

I'd call that an app that is ebook-like in some ways. Maybe if they made it a platform that third parties can make content for that drops into the app without further programming , then those files may possibly be considered ebooks. Probab

I'm sorry, but how on earth is a document (DRM-ed or not) the same thing as an app? An eBook is content in a certain format. An app is a program that does stuff with input. They are not the same. They aren't written the same, they aren't us

"For the most part, Windows can be just as secured as Linux." I'm sorry, but that sounds a lot like saying "a car can be made as waterproof as a submarine, if you do it right." Windows security is basically tacked-on afterwards.

I happen to know that in the USA, they can (and presumably, do) use plastic replicas for their photography. (My wife saw the ones Dairy Queen used while she worked there. She says they look amazingly real, even up close)
