I cancelled my account last month, mostly because they were incapable of dealing with the fact that my IP address is not near where I live.

That's harder to manage. Universities have dedicated IT teams and infra; individual research groups, especially underfunded ones, do not, and organising research groups on any grand scale is like herding cats.

It's been suggested on mastodon that all Universities should have their own Mastodon instance, maybe that would go some way to alleviate this problem? Universities used to be the pioneers of online communication but they seem to have b

I happened to listen to this podcast this morning which has some interesting things to say about this topic: https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/the-divided-dial/

Loved the comment about using extra blu-tack to reduce ram wobble, classic hack.

Until I can chat with all my friends regardless of which chat app they happen to use, we need to swing back. Open internet standards aren't just about the web.

It's a problem of scale. Usenet and IRC used to be self-moderated. The mods in each group or channel would moderate their own userbase, ban people who were causing problems, step in if things were getting too heated. At a broader level

I think this might be partly a generational thing. My son and my younger friends follow a wider variety of people and aren't so easily sucked into the echo chambers. The networks are also partly to blame with their recommendation syste

I've had a System 76 laptop for a few months now and I'm pretty happy with it. They've done a good job with Pop!Os, it's the only distro I've found that has made Gnome usable for me out of the box. The only downside

I bricked my zx81 just plugging in the ram pack (dixons were good enough to replace it) so soldering probably wouldn't have gone well. I'm working for a startup in Canada and I'm the oldest person in the company by a fairly w
