The legal system suffers from sclerosis from all these laws being piled on top of each other. Lawmakers aren't interested in refactoring. :P

They're demonstrating that it's practically impossible for an average person to NOT run afoul of copyright law during natural everyday activities.

Thank you very much for pointing me to this. The demoscene is/was amazing. One downside of everything going through browsers is that people have lost the ability to talk directly to the metal - it's what separated the men from the boys. Som

Neat. After playing Out of this World a long time ago, I was wondering if it was viable to compress video data using polygons annotated image block overlays in the high-frequency/high-error areas. Looks like I might've been onto something,

There was one or two like that in TNG, but those were very conspicuous in their intent to depict a day in the life of the crew.

My experience is that Flash executes fine, but it's awful for touchscreens - dragging, zooming, and clicking get all muddied up within the context of a Flash plugin rectangle.

You write software, right? Sometimes the user doesn't know they want something until they see it in front of them.

I feel that way about Slate and many of Gawker's properties. Buffer bloat isn't the bane of the Internet, insipid Top-10 lists are!

How about having her learn Lua? It's a nice interpreted language with just a handful of bad quirks, and she can get some practical experience by writing simple mods for games when she gets good enough. Maybe you could help her get the envir

Sure you can, you can encode information as gestures/taunts. So for four taunts, you have a base-4 encoding. It's great!

Seems like a shortsighted move, given the perception in developed Western countries that Twitter is a tool for fomenting freedom.

Nice workaround, but what to do about the browser's rendering? When the user goes back to the browser, what would he see?

Awesome for switching between languages, but not so good for absolute beginners. I forwarded this to a PhD biologist friend who wants to learn the basics of programming (to possibly apply to the bioinformatics field), and she said "...what?
