Well, his wife is a second generation Chinese-American and a Cantonese speaker. So that wouldn't be a very compelling reason to learn Mandarin.

Yes, in China people really tend to appreciate any effort you make at learning their language. You don't have to be fluent to be appreciated for trying. This will go a long way in endearing him to the Chinese people.

Make some Chinese friends and speak only Chinese with them. Really listen to them and try to say the words and phrases the way they say them. You have to socialize in the language, that's really the only way to learn it.

For most people this is probably true, but I started learning Mandarin in college and now have a native-sounding accent, and I know others who have pulled it off too. I think the key was that in the first few months of studying Mandarin, I

Exactly, when the tube gets warmed up and you crank up the pre-amp gain you get a warm-sounding natural distortion that afaik is impossible to emulate with a digital amp. I used to have a Marshall JCM 2000 Dual Super Lead, that thing sounde

Research says our ability to distinguish sounds in other languages ceases after first 8 months and that's why it's harder to understand someone talking in foreign language. For me this obstacle went away with sufficient immersio

Arguably so, by way of crooked government officials making cheap capital and permits available to their friends in exchange for gifts and insider investment opportunities.

TFA is correct that corruption and inequality are major hazards. But the greatest and most immediate threat is the real estate bubble, in my observation. There have been plenty of articles pointing out that the prices are unsustainably high

I currently work at a company where this isn't the case, and I have experienced a significant jump in earnings and responsibility, and it's refreshing, but it's sort of the exception that proves the rule. Internal mobilit

Let's remember that in those 42 years the number of BASIC, FORTRAN, or COBOL jobs has diminished through to almost nothing. The last person I met who described themselves as a COBOL programmer was about 10 years ago, and even they sai

I hear the legal recreational weed is selling out, that's part of the reason why only two stores are open, the supply is so limited. You can drive by and see a line out the door. The recreational weed is a separate supply, they had to

Korea has a version of black pudding as well, it's called soondae. Pig's blood, vermicelli noodles and spices encased in pig intestine. Pretty tasty.

Well, Google's C++ Style Guide[1] disallows exceptions, so it makes sense that they wouldn't put exceptions in Go either. Come to think of it, Go does seem pretty similar to the subset of C++ that Google allows their developers to

So, you did it in Go instead of Java, right? I think this is exactly what people mean when they say Go is more of a replacement for Java than it is a replacement for C++: In the sense that when Ruby and Python become too slow, people normal

Perhaps, but the problem is, with no generics or exceptions, it might just be too low-level and not expressive enough to really be a suitable Java replacement.

Rust addresses all of these problems. It's memory safe through compile-time reference counting and borrow checking (not garbage collected), and it has exceptions and generics. It also has a more powerful type system with type inference
