A lot of people pointed out counter-examples to the message of this article, and it is obviously much easier to get hired in another city in the actual world, vs. a hypothetical world where every hiring company thought like Mark Suster. How

oDesk collects a small fraction of the cost as their markup. This small fraction, is often of fairly small amounts. There is no possible way that they could provide a guarantee of project success, even if they tried. That said, I think oDes

I've used outsourced and offshore developers quite a bit, spread over 5+ years. From this, I heartily recommend: * For projects of substantial time and complexity, pay by the hour. You might like to get a bid and a complete system on a fix

I split my work about 40/60 between: 1) sitting down at my home office (nice wood furniture and decor the whole works) 2) standing at my work office (ugly but very functional perma-temporary standing desk) ... and don't have any problems at

It is on days like that, that I am happy that my blog and company sites are hosted on normal web hosting. I can run whatever blog or CMS I like, whatever versions I like, whatever ads I like (none), whatever affiliates I like (none), and ne

I wrote up how we attack this problem a couple of years ago: http://kylecordes.com/2007/01/20/web-app-swap/ including how we handle schema changes.

Caveat: I've used Puppet in production (and been very happy with the results), but only looked at Chef. From a quick survey of the article, it missed the #1 advantage of Puppet, though the comments hit it: Puppet is declarative, which is fu

I would like to see scribd links banished from here. Please, just link to the PDF, not to an idiotic site that puts a login barrier and other barriers around downloading the PDF. Every time I land on scribd, I make a throwaway account (with

The main problem with Time Machine is how badly it "works" with File Vault... backing up the encrypted stripes only, and only when you aren't logged in to your Mac, which in my case is approx 0% of the time.

> Suggesting that someone live off of credit cards... In one sense, this is obviously correct. However, the poster/partner is also about to go ask their friends and family to put money at risk to grow this business; yet the poster/partn

I had some of the same issues. Happily (sadly?) I had them so badly and soon that I was able to return the Pre for a refund. Details here: http://kylecordes.com/2009/06/06/palm-pre-first-impressions/

I haven't been to the Agile conference series in the last few years, so this is based on several-year-old impressions: Most of the attendees are not be people "buying" agile; they are (like you) "selling" agile. A great many of them could b

I posted similar, mixed experiences here: http://kylecordes.com/2009/06/06/palm-pre-first-impressions/ For example, the Pre browser "is so tedious that I find myself browsing less than before, even though I just got a slick new device." I
