Looks to be a great resource. I've been working on a WASM implementation of reading and writing Apache Parquet [0] and it's been difficult being new to WASM to find the best way of distributing the WASM that works on Node and thro

GeoTIFF does have internal compression support. In fact you can compress your GeoTIFF internally using WebP [0]. [0]: https://gdal.org/drivers/raster/cog.html#general-creation-op...

Yes. deck.gl has two ways of interfacing with Mapbox GL, either where deck.gl is a layer on top of Mapbox GL (with a separate WebGL context) or by sharing the same WebGL context. Sharing the same WebGL context allows e.g. Mapbox's 3D b

It would take someone designing the same style in the vector format. This [0] is the closest I've seen to a vector port of the default OSM style. Demo [1] [0]: https://github.com/baremaps/openstreetmap-vecto [1]:

Once you pass a certain zoom (looks like zoom 11.5 here) the imagery is no longer recent. You can see the copyright statement change to "Microsoft", where it presumably just loads data from Bing maps. At lower zooms, where the cop

Oh hi Sergio! Hope you're doing well. I'm not in the economics field anymore, but it would be cool to see if an economist could use this data. It's probably a little harder to use because you'd have to apply some vectori

S3 isn't a server, it's an object store. This uses Lambda (the serverless part) to fetch source data on demand, combine, reproject to web mercator, and send to the client. There are varied definitions of serverless; it isn't

The S3 bucket is hosted/managed by the U.S. Geological Survey. The only costs borne by them are the hosting, S3 requests, and S3 egress. In this case there's no egress since I fetch from the same region, so the marginal cost of th

Yeah pretty much. The backend needs to 1) find the S3 urls of the relevant images that intersect that XYZ tile index 2) read the relevant portion of each of them (removing the map collar as necessary [0]), and 3) composite them together to

You could, you'd just have to be wary of how large the header metadata would be. If you had a single Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFF of the world with internal tiles up to zoom 14, the header metadata could be a few MB, which wouldn't be

This is a good hex editor overview, but also the part about Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFFs is quite good. In the past couple of years COGs have really revolutionized the satellite imagery industry. Even USGS has seen this is the future and publis
