And because they are dangerous in yaml, the format in itself is dangerous to use. That's why any sane person should seriously consider whether using the format makes sense.

Sorry, I don't understand the benefit. Buffer them? It's clearly harmful to write escape codes in string literals. They are not readable. The escape code to change any text to red should appear in code exactly once. This is analog

Well they wrote: "This tends to result in strings in our code that look a little like this." That's why I think they have these strings in the code.

Seems to me it's bad practice to combine the text you want to show with the formatting (escape codes) in string literals. Everything is then immediately dependent on specific type of UI technology (terminal).

This is a news article, not a scientific article. The actual (one of them) article referenced is this (from Cell): https://doi.org/10.1016%2Fj.cell.2019.08.035

Unit test that documents the required functionality of code helps a lot. After that, one can refactor the code with all kinds of cleverness.

No, it clearly says two memory accesses per character. "At worst" calculation is just calculating the worst case (string not found) where it has to scan the whole string and... access each byte twice. It doesn't matter whethe

Explain how it was like that in the case of NT. IBM went their own way with OS/2 and Microsoft hired Dave Cutler from Digital to develop NT over several years. Windows NT is not OS/2. It never was.

I know the script format, I just wasn't aware that there is a freedom to excessively capitalize random words. :)

I always love to imagine how the developer who designed these protections would react when reading about these hacks. Are they frustrated, amused, angry? Do they need to resist an urge to correct some small detail?

The author seems to have ended up in a silly debate when defending the use of SSE3 (and not SSE2). "You are absolutely not going to 100% SSE2 out in the real world. In fact, you have many 16-bit x86 systems out there. There are people
