There's so much more to a chip than its ISA. I'm not sure how the ISA changes anything. If I design a board around an STM32, for instance, even within that family I'd have to find a chip that has the same exact footprint to b

Take this with a grain of salt: Retirement is a scam. I, for one, plan to stay away from it as long as I possibly can. My body will retire its own self when it's done.

It's not just the licensed bands but also SAR. Commercial devices with BT are often close to the body. For those devices to be certified they have to operate within specific power levels, and this has to not be operable/changeable

Because it's RF, shipping firmware can't be open source -- end user tweakable and replaceable. I bet this is one reason BT will never be good. If it could be open source there would be a winning stacks (or a few) that would bubble

That's an interesting take. Thanks for sharing. Sure, I can definitely see the "google this error" effect as having permitted a higher degree of complexity. Or, maybe to be more accurate, lowered the barrier to entry to creat

I have copied-and-pasted the strangest of kernel errors, compiler errors, god-knows-what-obscure-tool errors, etc. over the past 20+ years into search engines and have almost always been delighted and amazed at how somehow someone somewhere

See the "Acknowledgements" section of his book -- pp. 299-304. Yes, Norman had written "The Psychology of Everyday Things" prior to joining apple. But in his acknowledgements to this particular book (i.e. "The Desi

I don't mean to nitpick, but please refer to my comment regarding the inability of being able to inventory everything that can possibly go wrong in a computerized system. That's especially true given that if you take any successfu

That's such a godawful book. In my view it epitomizes everything that is wrong with design today. And the worst part is that comments like these make it come off as the go-to reference to actually solving these problems. The reasons it

When I was younger, I read many books by Henri Laborit ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_Laborit ) -- his work is predominantly in French. As a surgeon and neurobiologist, he wrote a lot about the biology of behaviou

One of the primary uses-cases for VMs in Android seems to be a desire to replace the Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) permitted by things like TrustZone. There have been several presentations about this by Google: - LPC 2020: https:&#

I would expect there would be better ROI in funding the development of open source EDA tools. This is already ongoing and the current trade conflict will likely accelerate it.

I won't claim any expert status, but I've butted heads with RMS and Eben Moglen a few times. Have a look at Matt Asay's OSCON 2016 presentation "Lessons learned from 15+ years in open source", he breaks it down fair

I've come to view use of AGPL as an admission of failure or proof of lack of understanding of how to build a business around open source software. While AGPL is sold as a means for protecting against abuse of a party's good-faith

Isn't this more analogous to the GNU toolchain being made available? Maybe then RISC V is the "UNIX standard" of which a "Linux" silicon equivalent will yet come to be? ... maybe PULP or otherwise ...?
