I think my original statement was wrong, but I may have misheard what he told me. Looking up references on housing and CPI I see a lot about how the housing component gives bad signal -- it was rising during the 2008 crash for example. It&

Most of the checks reduce to range checks, eg overlong sequences have 0's in the low-order bits of the first byte, which means 0xE0 is invalid. I don't think he missed anything.

I was wrong -- I see both rent and what appears to be ownership costs in there.

Rent is not in the CPI. That's what made Shiller's work useful (comparing housing costs and CPI). Edit: Shiller was wrong (I asked him about this point after a lecture about his work on historical housing prices).

These stories become like memes that get reposted over and over. There was a "study" about drug testing welfare applicants in Florida a few years ago where the authors claimed that it only caught a handful of people and cost more

He didn't clarify it in the article, but deletes are basically flagged by a "deleted" column, and updates are implemented as delete/insert. The overriding idea is that a row is never overwritten; storage is write-only.

Vertica seems to include some of these observations, such as global consistency and group commit. I believe these are easier to achieve (lower overhead) in OLAP due to fewer, larger transactions.

The IPO process is very tricky too; they want large holders to keep their stock as long as possible either to avoid tanking it or to keep the float small so it will bid up quickly. Naturally all these people can get out before the employee

It seems like a group thing where they buy credibility with industry insiders. IPO's are all about lending credibility (that's why investment banks take a huge chunk), and the do-nothing hires are apparently related to that.

I suspect that driverless cars will end up somewhere on the spectrum between buses and human-operated cars. They're extremely cautious and will be a lot slower than human-operated.

As I originally heard it the Fed or HUD(?) started moving towards guaranteeing subprime mortgages, and the AAA rating idea took off from that. The Fed issues bonds that are risk-free, so brokers extrapolated government buying of a few subp

This is true in analytics as well; the down-to-the-metal issues that DBA's used to deal with have been reduced quite a bit even in on-prem datacenters. I used to just tell people my job was to make analytics a service and not just a p
