Should have qualified by sentence with "open source" and "free." OTOH, I don't think IDS is a flawed concept it's just used the wrong way in most enterprises.

Competition is a good thing. Snort has been the only IDS in the market (I'm aware of Bro) and now there is competition in Suricata. The problem I see is that Suricata folks confusing "improvement" and "innovation." IDS, IMHO, still need inn

Perhaps people stopped talking about matrices because social graphs are sparse. Also, most of the time papers (esp. system papers) are written to solve a problem and if the paper proposes a solution to solving a social graph related problem

I down voted you by accident! My bad. Yes, it was painful to read and I missed the whole point of the post unless it is just listing of where we find and use "graphs." I think this is a post out of his comfirt zone; I like his VC and startu

Mindless consuming kills creativity; whether at school or at home. Got to stop that and engage people to _do something_ of their own.

Try allocating a very large chunk of memory using a high-level language with garbage collector. It's not always about collection.

The bigger picture is vendors can't impose rules on what security researchers do on their free-time if they are not willing to pay for the bugs the researchers find and report. Hence the reference to the registry entry: "HKCU\Microsoft\Wind

Good article but a little resarch into recent publications in systems conferences could have helped put it in a better direction. Althogh lot of programmers use text-book algorithm there exist a large body of work (in CS) that focus on the

I think most complaints I have seen/heard about IE are not about innovation but about violation (of standards) either by deviating from what the standard says or simply not implementing certain portions. Innovation without violation is grea

My question wasn't about the article. My question was how much fragmentation is there on iPhone to warrant VM. It has fixed memory and runs only one app at a time (mostly).

Yup: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1240171 I also wonder how useful virtual memory would be on a device like iPad/iPhone. With limited memory and no multitasking how often would address fragmentation be an issue.

iPad will do to personal computers what iPhone did to smartphones. Let's not worry about iPad or iSlate but think of it as a new mode of computing. I can see schools, hospitals, first responders (police, ambulance, fire department) adopting

Most of the time it's that question that bothers you more when you're using something GPL. If I do X should I release the code or not? BSD eliminates that nagging question from the back of your mind.

When your team sort of grew up with FreeBSD (or any other OS) you want to lean that way. Also, when you're shipping an appliance you don't have to think about licenses. Those are the two reasons we stick with FreeBSD.

True, but "people" you talk about are like you and I who wish we could poke around with this device a lot more. Most people just consume and hardly produce anything-- other than, perhaps, emails, todo lists, & recipe notes. I think the

Yes. iPad is for consumption not for production. Don't know when some of these guys will realize it and stop making a big fuzz. I don't see the point of it.

Is it work in progress? It seems very thin because most of what the book is covering is in Boost documentation. I only checked out the on-line (HTML) version. Nevertheless, I do think Boost can use a new book.

I wonder whether earlier pricing ($49) was chosen to only have serious users before opening up the app to everyone. Perhaps an effective method to recruit beta testers who care.
