I often find myself mote productive after a mildly bad night. The brain stops anxiously looking for nuts to crack, and instead can easily focus on a single problem for a long time. Isn't best for all scenarios, but definitely superior

Unfortunately, today, Vulkan doesn't get you cross platform compatibility. On many Windows machines only dx11/dx12 is available. gfx-rs (which wgpu-rs is based on) is the closest thing one can get to a low overhead portable GPU AP

They do have a single GPU API (wgpu-rs) and only one version of the shaders - SPIRV.

Do other Vulkan samples work for you (e.g. vkcube)? I was getting this issue on a laptop with both NV and Intel. Problem can be worked around by forcing the Vulkan loader to use Nvidia GPU (by providing `VK_ICD_FILENAMES=<path_to_nvidia_

And to clarify further, the next wgpu-rs version will not have features for backends. Vulkan/Metal/DX12/DX11 will be automatically exposed where appropriate, so there will not be a requirement to have Vulkan.

> Also is there a reason for using Metal rather than MoltenVK for macOS? Let me ask it the other way: is there a reason to use MoltenVK if we have a Metal backend?

They bought me on "No full install". I've always been annoyed how Unix systems treat the system as "their property" with the user just being a temporary guest (if not an intruder).

Since Mozilla has switched to Zoom internally as of recent, I'd be surprised if this compatibility issue stays unfixed for long.

My main problem with SPIR-V specialization today is that it doesn't affect the shader interface. For WebGPU, we don't want to validate presence of resources that the user doesn't need, we don't want to allocate registers

Metal also is quite different between mobile and desktop, so it's not solving this portability issue completely. It has the benefit of standardizing more of the limits/capabilities in the feature tables as a part of the "spec

well, one of the points to go with SPIR-V is to not standardize higher level languages that translate into it

The article is pretty good at explaining why WebGPU is needed for the Web. It could probably be more clear about the fact that all browser vendors are developing this API (i.e. it's not Apple's thing, and never been, if you don&#x

Wow, thanks for such a detail response! Delaying with decision to adopt Rendy or wgpu-rs is reasonable: both are still maturing, and are in the early adopter phase. > We're particularly interested in rendy's render graph [1] ap

Minority here, I never understood why music players shifted towards iTune-ish style of owning and re-categorizing everything in their own way... I mean, OS has a file system, why not just rely on it? Throw some searchable tags in, and you g

I'm afraid this time we'll need to switch before things start breaking, or otherwise less and less devs will bother testing on alternatives.

Current state of Vulkan port is that the correctness is on par with GL, minus a few driver bugs. We still need to re-architect WebRender a bit in order to get the performance advantage over GL.

It's not absolutely impossible. DXBC was well reverse engineered, and DXIL could also be a direct target for translation. It's up to future work, which for us also includes writing an in house shader converter as a substitute to S
