Our research group has had experimental papers rejected because they did not agree with first principles simulations. The issue is that at least in quantum chemistry and materials physics, the theory is simple and easy to write down but mak

"There is no permanent place for ugly mathematics" -G.H.Hardy I loathe these automatic proof systems (at least the state of the art today) - I think they may be useful for verifying that a complex CPU correctly implements integer arithmetic

This is weak evidence. I would be more convinced by a controlled experiment. Do a study where two demographically equivalent groups are given equal sun exposures one with sunscreen the other without, and then compare their rates of melanoma

It's a shame how little Nobel gold there is to go around - so many deserving people get left out. For every winner there's a long line of those equally worthy IMHO. In this case, I'm surprised they didn't give some of the prize to Goldston

I'm not a wall street hater, but it's not hard to understand why people feel a little tinge of poetic justice about LEH el. al. - http://www.google.com/search?q=announces+layoffs+stock+price... I know that this is bogus on so many levels

Wow, good work! but there are still plenty of examples in nature where the fibonacci sequence does occur in the leaf patterns on plants. Very recently, there has been some beautiful theory explaining the appearance of the fibonacci sequenc

so I dug up the reference on this in case you are interested and have access to nature. Google scholar has pointers to the pdf Aho AC et. al. "Low retinal noise in animals with low body temperature allows high visual sensitivity." Nature. 1

Rhodopsin just like a photomultiplier detector has a certain noise level. The rate of noise counts decreases with temperature - so you would expect the performance of a person at this task to improve as you cooled their body. This was actu

It's a mixed emotion to laugh at the misfortune of others, but this is the most hilarious thing I've read in a long time. (well, at least for today) It's the perfect illustration of panic and greed stomping all over logic and reason.
