I do agree with you on the well-supported and well-integrated part. Ubuntu has the polish and ease of use of OS X with the great hardware support of (nearly) Windows, with the solidity of a steadfast GNU/Linux foundation. But whenever I he

I suppose it's time to switch to Fedora, now, even though I've been holding out for as long as humanly possible. This just pushes me over the edge.

I was about to blog an article like this yesterday, but it seems I do not have to anymore. Another thing I might add to this exceptional piece of work is that whenever you force anyone to do anything, even if it is intrinsically "fun" (such

As far as servers go, if you don't need the sophistication of OS X and its great development tools and process handling, why not just use an off-the-shelf and supported desktop (i.e., Lenovo ThinkCentre) with *BSD on it? Paying the premium

Absolute hogwash. I'm fourteen. And I code C++ and understand everything flawlessly. If somebody isn't learning how to code (or how to do anything, really), it's either because of one of two reasons: a) they don't want to learn how to code

What coreutils are you using? I get: ~$ man su NAME su - change user ID or become superuser OS X uses the FreeBSD coreutils and not the GNU ones, so if you're on either OS X or FreeBSD, that would explain it.

It's CISC rather than RISC, and ARM chips are also designed to use as little power as possible, reducing performance.

May be true for desktops, but if you have ever tried to code on a 1366x768 14" laptop display, you'll agree. 8:5/16:10 or even 3:2 fill the horizontal field of view well while also delivering more vertical space. Even if 16:9 is theoretical

You are missing something. 2 things, actually. Cache and instruction set. Intel is still more powerful than ARM because of its instruction set.

Props to them for making the display vertically rather than horizontally oriented. I've been incredibly tired of the stupidly short 16:9 displays dominating the market. However, one has to wonder why such a good display is being wasted on a

Why not leave AMAs where they belong, Reddit? Call me a hipster, but I like the peace, quiet, and esotericism of HN. Adding AMAs would screw everything up; we'd get tons of new signups and the community would be diluted like Reddit is cur

Trust me, when you have really crappy hardware (Intel Atom 1.3GHz w/ 512MB mem), you will notice the difference. Execution of commands that takes 2-3 seconds on Gnome Terminal will be nearly instant on xterm.
