There is a somewhat stubborn idea that a government will always have many inefficiencies baked in, since there’s no real incentive to remove them beyond a generic “that would be nice”.

A gov-backed retirement plan actually is nice. You don’t have to worry about losing your Chrysler pension because they went out of business.

There are a couple stores around me run by small families, and honestly sometimes I feel like I'm halfway to being part of their family when I visit. They recognize me, greet me by name, and start firing up my order right away. Or they

Being stuck in a computer might not be so bad. "Wake up" once a year decade for a few hours, see what happened, go back to "sleep". Immortality on call.

I'm with you. The idea of being immortal is terrifying to me. Will I still care about nature after seeing millions of extinctions? Will I still care about life when I see trillions of humans doing human things? Will I even still feel p

I remember being bummed when I played WC3 and there was no oil resource. Lots of sky and ground units, but I guess a navy just wasn't useful enough? Which I suppose I could see. A big benefit in militaries is the ability to quickly pro

Of course I know how market forces work. They are not the only forces we can manage. They are not the only levers we can pull. Economics are cool, but not almighty. There is no scenario in which a hospital gets extra profit, and turns aroun

Actually neither - you were suggesting that money makes the problem valid. It doesn't. You can charge all you want - it either becomes useless (why are we trying to find ways to get more profit to hospitals???) or it reduces the staff

Great response and very informative - no clue how I totally missed the references and stories about this manga. That’s pretty cool - I’ll have to look it up!

I hate those stupid things so much. They're really, as far as I can tell, just moving all labor to the kitchen and drive-thru, while considering the dining area an afterthought. Maybe they're just following the trends their own nu

I'm glad your dad got better, it had nothing to do with his diet and fasting. It's no different than Steve Jobs stubbornly becoming a fruititarian to treat his cancer. If his immune system had fought it off, then fruit would be a

I haven't used any O'Reilly products, but if your library offers any, you can probably access the product via libby, which works on a phone/tablet? Just a guess. Libby also supports sending the data to kindles, at least.
