I haven't even heard of that one -- I'll check it out. I'm almost done with The Power of Babel, which covers a lot of the same ground as his TTC lectures.

This article smacks of hard-right bias.

When you buy it (I just did) you get a message with a $5 discount code in it ("for your friends"). I'd share it here (aren't we all friends here?) but I'm not sure if that's OK with the authors. Is it OK?

I love that this board is intellectually curious enough to vote up articles like this. (I'm a word wonk, so this is especially interesting to me.) FWIW: If anyone is interested in the history of language and how we got to talking this way,

If it's your company, you know what results are (you'd better!). No, you can't track that, but I'm not sure it's meanful to compare startup progress.

How about milestones achieved? Anything but hours. I did the startup thing (worked at a successful startup) 10 years ago, and we did work long days -- but spent most of that time creating things from whole cloth that exist as commodities to

It's probably just me, but the 10 reasons to buy seemed to far outweigh the reasons against. Someone I know is getting a Kindle2 soon, so I suppose I'll get to judge for myself.

1) "The USA will emerge stronger than before" That's a tall order. I'd settle for we will recover... I wonder if that's a promise the President should be making. I took this to mean we'd be stronger in the sense that we wouldn't be so vul

It's not much when you a) have to split it 2 or 3 ways, and b) have to watch the VCs take home several times as much, when you did all the work. My point is that there is a value judgement here. VCs are being overvalued, and founders are be

My point is that it doesn't have to be that way. The VCs are behaving in a predatory way, and they don't need to. I've worked at such a startup, and taking funding isn't just a nice option; usually it's a matter of survival. Of course a VC

They're being screwed: after developing a workable idea and putting years of work into it, they come away with practically nothing. If that's "the game" then no wonder founders are turning away from VCs. That's why I'm suggesting VCs change

I am not an expert on this. However, it's probably worth mentioning here what I've understood from economists: the banks are not nearly as broke as they say they are -- the ones that are still in business, anyway. If they were really that b

Two thoughts come to mind: 1) the VC system needs to be reformed. If founders are being screwed like this (and I think it's reasonable to say this is a screw), they're going to find other ways to raise capital. (And they are!) VCs should be

California is a big state. If half of the state has no stations within 100 miles, that's a great start, considering the geography to be covered. The Tesla sedan goes 220 miles per charge.

French revolution, a certain Marie A. is said to have responded to the question of the fate of the masses with "let them eat cake". It's paralleled here by this guy's suggestion that we should just let the market do its work, human conseque

It seems like everyone's a prophet these days. I understand why, I think -- we all hate uncertainty. But no one knows the future; this is all too chaotic to predict. Let's hope that fact actually works to our advantage.

It's a technicality. I did a thesis on the movie, and that's why I suppose I'm picking on a nit. Clarke wrote the novel later, but he and Kubrick wrote the screenplay together over the course of maybe three years. Clarke did always intend t

He's distorting the truth, though. What he says happened: we helped prop up banks when they needed it most. What actually happened: we gave banks money to prop them up, and they used to do things like buy out their competitors and give uppe

Fun list! He's got some facts wrong (e.g. 2001 was not made as a companion piece to the novel, which came later), and he apparently never understood Jacob's Ladder (think Occurance at Owl Creek Bridge as a full-length movie). But who
