Idk if this is universal but as soon as I’m on vacation I start learning new things, reading, and getting creative. When I work, my brain is fried from work. On the weekends I need a long period of idleness to recover before I can read a ch

The Guardian is so complicit in reinforcing all of those misleading, industry-driven narratives that it’s not even funny. Completely co-opted. Philosophers should be used in RL training to train the model how to reason well, not to scratch

This isn’t going to get fixed in my lifetime, and that’s sad. Countries have lost the ability to act.

China has its own ideology which upholds the power structures over there. It's very different from its western counterpart. Part of it is that yes there may not be freedom of expression, but thanks to the Party's competent guidanc

Not quite. In some cases we’re certain there’s no benefit.

Ideology isn't something you can avoid. It's always present in a society to support the power structures. Conflating "just having markets" with the current form of capitalism in western countries is exactly the kind of w

That's most certainly not what happens! The money that goes into buying a stock is being transferred to the people who sold you the stock (which, outside of the IPO are almost always market players). A company with a high stock price c

You're conflating compounding market value with economic growth. One counterexample is when inflation raises prices, but not economic output. Asset prices grow but there's no growth.

I think it’s productive because it serves to stabilize the society by giving it an ideological underpinning. Roughly: there’s no better alternative to capitalism and we have capitalism therefore we have reached optimal society.

The prompter of the LLM that authored the article thought that should be the central point of it. Conclusion that they were going for: we don’t need economics today and everything should be left to its own devices. Interestingly, an LLM can

In practice, markets were managed since the Bronze Age. Back then, authorities set wages and prices through palace and temple institutions, standardized weights, etc.

You probably mean that those with money decide what has value or something like that. If you don’t want to talk that’s fine by me.

Then the value-expectations are even more dubious and harder to justify.

If by value you mean profit, but that's a conflation that you shouldn't be making. Often profit is generated by actively harming people (eg. human trafficking).

OK I accept this definition for the scope of this comment, but there's no profit on the horizon.

You mean those who can pay the most for them? Value is not in the picture here.

Depends which objection you mean... But your choices are more limited than you might think. Ultimately what's available to you is decided by the economic machinery upstream.
