Out of curiosity, are you against higher taxes on alcohol? It's definitely regressive, but there is also a more definite link to harmful effects (side-stepping somewhat the issue of taxes on necessary items like food).

Well, no argument here about consumption taxes on "food" being regressive. :) Edit: adding scare quotes because coke may not be food, but bread is!

I commute by bike through central London (Zone 4 to Zone 1). While I try to avoid busy roads (and roads at all, when I can), I don't feel like I'd be able to listen to something while biking and still be safe. Is your bike route q

Yup. Similarly if someone is already so fed up with the toy that they are going to throw it away (rather than give it away in their local classified ads), how do you convince them to go through the effort of putting it on your service?

I've got mixed feelings about the TFSA as well. I think they are easier to understand than RRSPs and thus easier for people to use. But I have this nagging suspicion that the $10k/year would forgo too much revenue down the line. T

That cheapness is mainly due to non-priced-in externalities (greenhouse gas farts! water use!) and poor treatment of animals (not that I'm a PETA member or anything). EDIT: And as mentioned elsewhere: government subsidies in many count

IMO, even simpler than that would be to stop subsidising parking: raise parking fees, eliminate free road parking, force companies to charge for parking (this part may not be feasible, special land taxes on parking lots?). Whether or not yo
