At my company in NYC (Intent Media) the founders specifically spent time writing a clause into our standard employment agreement granting everyone the rights to their side projects. I'm not sure how common this is, but it seems like somethi

The Continental application for iOS allows you to just pull up your boarding pass on the screen and have the security screener scan the phone screen. I would imagine that some of the other airline apps do so as well.

Am I reading the chart on that page correctly that the post-graduation salary is on average 20-30% less for most MBA graduates? I find that to be a shocking figure after the 2 years and huge amount of money that people generally invest in g

How about people who write a blog like this and then plaster it with ads?

I wonder if they pushed this out of the door because of the traction that Instagram is picking up right now. It feels very similar, although not as refined at this point.

The problem is that "agile" doesn't mean anything. On my team we follow an agile approach, but we also have rough ideas on product direction for the next year or so and themed releases planned out for the next few months. For us it all come

Does anyone else find the entire premise flawed? If all he wanted to do was maximize the amount of income he's going to pass on to his children then he would be an investment banker, not a Harvard professor/author. Any bank would take him i

Perhaps instead of down-voting this you can simply reply to it. Unless of course you don't think that discussions happen everyday or that it's not ultimately saving us time.

Many companies, software (Facebook) and otherwise (Toyota) have open layouts to encourage problem solving in groups. Most of the good engineers I know are just as adept at hashing out a solution on a whiteboard as they are doing it quietly

Yes, discussions between programmers about how to best implement things happen every day. We work in an open work space, and I can't even count the number of times that someone has jumped into a discussion with a better idea of how to imple

I require all of my programmers to be on site, not because of any need to monitor what they're doing (Pivotal Tracker, source control, IM, and email take care of most of that for us, even while we're in the office) but to have the kind of c

That's bullshit. There are a lot of impressive startups here and a number of others that are about to come out of the gate that are going to kill it. I lived in SF for a number of years, and the mix of impressive to unimpressive start-ups i

Pre-owned games pose much of the same problem on the console market as piracy does on the PC market. The end result of both is the same: people play our games without a single bit of money ending up with the people who made the game. In th

I'm curious, has anyone ever seen a software patent novel enough that it could be considered a "non-obvious" solution to the problem that the inventor is trying to attack?

No it doesn't. You're just playing semantic word games. If I incorporate a company one day and bring you on board the next day with half of the available founders equity then would you argue that you're "just an employee" because you weren'

That's an interesting question that I don't really know the answer to, short of falling back on the generic "trust your network" sort of answer. Also, I'm not suggesting that you cut out the phone interview all-together, just keep it short
