I always hear it's so expensive, but compared to what? Just continuing to burn fossil fuels? Costs I see to solar and wind that I rarely see anyone mention are: What happens when you cover large deaths of land with solar and windmills

Yes, if it gets cheaper people will migrate to electricity and then wind will not be able to be the "main" source of electricity anymore. They'll have to burn more coal or gas. Yay?

But the headline is very misleading. The article says a third of their electricity comes from wind. 1/3 is not what came to my mind when I read, "main source of electricity." And now knowing that electricity is only 18% of

And people wonder why health care in America costs so much. You have two businesses (at least one of which is totally removed from the services being provided) trying to scam each other every time someone goes to the doctor.

This is some of the best hacking I've seen on Hacker News in a long time! My son broke his arm skiing a few months ago and we went to the clinic that is at the ski resort. They x-rayed him, set the bone a little (thankfully it didn&#x

Amazing! If you ever wondered how Linux and open source were able to completely destroy proprietary UNIX, this is a great example. Competing proprietary libraries on competing proprietary UNIX implementations all with subtle differences j

How then is that FULL self driving? Cruise and Wayno cars have driven millions of miles with nobody in the driver's seat and they have avoided killing anyone. They don't require a human being constantly alert and ready to take o

There will be ignorant arguments against this due to cyber security concerns, enemy nations benefiting from the code, the copyrights of the people/companies who are being paid to write the code, etc., etc.

Cruise and Waymo have slightly inconvenienced emergency responders. Tesla crashed into a firetruck and killed someone.

Yes, you can a ton more code that you have to check over with a fine toothed comb in much less time! Is that a win?

You have to be including Tesla's not actually self driving to get to that statistic for self driving cars.

I’m sorry, but these arguments are terrible. I see them boiling down to this: “Use GPT to do this thing!” “But GPT is notorious for confidently getting things wrong” “That’s ok! Because you’ll know it’s wrong!” Maybe I’m a little sore rig

This!! All the gushing over these GPTs doing what looks to me like, a bad job of talking smart without actually doing anything, make me feel like I'm going insane, or I'm the only sane person left.

Ok, but take a step back and really look at the whole situation here. So you've created a machine that solves problems in kind of the same way humans do. Yay? What overall problem is a machine like this solving? How is this better

There's a scam going around targeting teenage boys that I don't see people talking about. Scammer poses as a cute teenage girl on Snapchat/TikTok/Instagram and starts DMing a teenage boy late at night. Eventually convi

Sorry, but shit happens and so yes, we all need to learn and exercise some financial prudence. "Don't put all your eggs in one basket," is not a "weird financial hedging game," it's common sense.

Even just two or three accounts at different banks would be more prudent and would have prevented the run on SVB that ultimately killed it.

Basically just told the kid to stop staying up so late reading Harry Potter. He said to try a regular sleep schedule with an early bedtime first, and if that didn’t work to come back and there was some medication we could try. The regular
