As bad as this is...as this thread points out, more of the money needs to go to artists, and supporting fewer employees should let them do this.

I would love to see historical rates in urban vs rural/suburban areas for this, alongside migration/growth rates - does something like that exist? My son (in college) probably won’t be able to afford much of a house in the Bay Are

These were (intended for) Unix machines, not general purpose PCs… the assumption was that everyone was compiling anything that went on the system anyways, or were buying licenses for a specific hardware box. So at least it wasn’t considered

Legislators pass laws, judges (normally) can only strike them down. It is pretty much like other places otherwise, but that process of the government limiting itself is a key feature imho.

I think this might be useful if we kind of wargame prospective regulations to follow all the ways people might abuse it, then you might get something that works. Maybe lawmakers already do that? This thread feels in that spirit too…

And what happens if the server holding the keys gets compromised? I guess most manufacturers won’t care, but the more reputable ones would have things in their source they consider proprietary and would definitely not want to have to submit

It could mean more than that, or maybe not. Velikovsky had the interesting hypothesis that you could compare this histories of different traditions to see if they synchronize. For example, joshua stopping the sun for three days, which would

This is a feedback loop though. It is a reflection of the moderation wars in some ways: Google’s main job now is to try to keep you away from malicious sites as much as find good ones. So they prioritize ‘known good’ sites (big platforms, m

This is not really about marriage vs friendship, but two kinds of friendship imho… this could just as easily have gone the other way (new friend attacking her romantic partner). But (also imho) no one really knows what marriage is anymore a

Two fundamental truths: - nature is inherently competitive. - civilization and culture temper this but requires vigilance to maintain. The second implies that some cultures may be more effective at tempering nature’s excesses than others… a

Your friend often asks for you to spot them $5 when you are out at lunch, it’s no big deal and they’ve always paid it back. Now they want to borrow $5k all of a sudden. Do you give it to them, just based on the above history?

It’s more than that - banks used to have prepayment penalties. People with high credit scores are (probably?) also more likely to move, which means the bank may only get a couple years of interest until you pay it back (when you sell to buy

This is because money is trying to be two things at once - a medium of exchange, and a stable asset - and those are often in conflict. If I just want to trade my bushel of corn for your chicken, money makes it easier - I exchange my corn fo

I wouldn’t say that’s lying, just an somewhat inaccurate simplification… language is always spoken in a shared context that, like Huffman encoding, assigns short terms to common situations (wife, girlfriend, flatmate) and things outside tho
