See also zsh, another great shell that gets little attention. Recent versions of zsh (though not the version that ships with OS X) have a feature called vcs_info that will pull information from git, svn, cvs, hg, darcs, bzr (& more) for

The red sliders were also not working for me on OS X w/FF 3.6.3 though the slideshow and canvas mask demos were. Figured I'd try with Chrome and Safari and the red sliders didn't work there either. After I reloaded the page in Firefox, they

That aside, "git rm" (and "svn rm" and "cvs remove" for that matter) all tab-complete for me even when the "file is gone".

Reminds me of a story I read years ago (can't find a working link) of how the IT staff at a hospital would routinely wipe hard drives by just taking them into the MRI room. Once, one of them decided to save time by not removing the drive fr

As long as you're not dealing with a TLD with a wildcard (like .ws) you should be able to just check for NXDOMAIN status on your NS queries.

I wasn't familiar with the audio piece that inspired this so I downloaded the mp3 from http://www.ubu.com/sound/lucier.html . It turned out to be a nice background soundtrack for programming today. Music with words usually distracts me wh

I can think of a couple bands with names that give zero results on google: "!!!" and "+/-". Though ungoogleable, I see they are "amazonable".

Right. I'm sure a large number Facebook's current users have devices on their networks that are more than capable of hosting an HTTP server (and maybe already do): the aforementioned DSL/cable modems, plus wireless routers, Roku boxes, vide

ECMA's a good choice, considering web developers should already be familiar with it, and (I think it's safe to say) it's a far better language than PHP. A different language running on a different backend means making a clean break with all

I think the point is the "winners" have something in common and this is no accident. XML and SOAP came out of "let's invent new formats and protocols"-type standardization, while REST and JSON were products of (essentially) one guy looking

Never mind the FAQ, the "Download Now!" link is a 404. I'm kind of surprised that in 2010 stock Wordpress would not have this kind of cache-friendliness built in.

For me, it's not really about the kernel but the whole OS, userland included. I agree it's still mostly matter of taste, or maybe more honestly, what you're used to. Some people really like apt-get/dpkg but I prefer working with "make build

It doesn't have to be an either/or. I've been very happy with git-svn as my svn client. It's not git-like, it's actually git.

The most interesting results for me are Charlie Watts'. Of the Rolling Stones' explicitly dance-oriented tracks from the 70s, "Hot Stuff" and "Miss You" are 87%, and "Shattered" is 85%. I read this as being way too loose to have had machine

Say there's a hole in your web browser that lets an attacker run arbitrary code. That's bad news for your home directory, but at least if the binaries on your machine (under /usr/local or wherever) are owned by root, the browser is running

There's a more general solution for putting VCS information in your zsh prompt called vcs_info. I don't know if it covers all the features of these hg and git prompts, but it does support svn and cvs (among others), which I still have to us

This is where git can be more subversive than svn ever was. You need one (influential) developer to start using git-svn, and wait for it to spread.

That's what they're doing, though only if the domain matches /^www\..+/ which (along with their allowing you to opt-out) makes it a few degrees less evil than Verisign's infamous "Site Finder".

Tmux's splitting is nice, but not quite as useful to me as screen's version. Screen will let me put any of my existing windows in a "pane" while tmux won't (or maybe it does and the docs aren't clear enough for me). Another thing I found us

They are pretty much the same, but GraphicsMagick's big CLI improvement over ImageMagick is that everything's based off an executable called 'gm'. IM's horribly generic 'convert' becomes 'gm convert', etc. I'm not going to defend their CLIs
