Does something have to have a pecuniary reward to be worthwhile? Stories have been told since the beginning of humanity, and I'm sorry if you see them as a waste of time.

Then I'll say it anonymously as a former graduate student who left academia? For getting a PhD at any tier 2 or lower school, it is sufficient to work hard and be reasonably intelligent.

When I travel with my laptop, I often don't have access to power. Most trips in a car are less than 100 miles. Yet nobody wants to purchase a low range EV. Extended battery life is useful on the occasions you need it.

Happiness is relative, not absolute. If not, our peasant ancestors surely would've killed themselves out of depression.

I found math class stultifying and boring until the focus switched from learning algorithms for computation to doing proofs of relations and concepts. Also I began to discover the actual applications for advanced math, instead of learning i

Everyone I know who has advanced skills in a foreign language spent one or more years in their target country where they had to speak the language daily, combined with a structured language course or class. Otherwise it is extremely difficu

My favorite textbook: Elements of Statistical Learning by Hastie. It's free, too! If you don't understand something in the book, back up and learn the pre-reqs as needed. http://web.stanford.edu/~hastie/ElemSt

That's a poor opinion. I wonder if a prosecutor without that discretion would've ever been able to make a civil rights charge stick in 60s Alabama in any majority-white county.

Incumbent property owners vote and agitate. Transient low-income residents don't. Property developers have alternatives in that they can build luxury apartments at the $/sq. ft that a microunit might command.

I'll just quote Soustrup here: "There are only two kinds of languages: the ones people complain about and the ones nobody uses." In particular you see the spreadsheet GUI as a downfall, but I think it is a great enabler that

This mentality is so weird to me. The thief is liable. And I'm happy it is this way, otherwise 3rd party locksmiths and garages wouldn't be able to work on your car.

Perhaps the most important thing I took away from this write-up is the motivation: even though state of art NNs can perform better, they are impossible to debug for humans. Bayesian methods like the decision tree allow humans to interpret t

Yet another case of NIMBYism. Why does the community get to decide on what is done with private property? A radio tower mast harms nobody, will not significantly affect traffic, utilization of public utilities, or pollute. It's telling

Yes, and that's how I would use a language that would allow mixed picture and text logic flows. At a certain level of abstraction block diagrams greatly assist understanding program flow, and it is redundant that I have to write the co

Sure, the contents of the text box is necessary. But treating the contents as a black box is not something new, and I don't see it as a problem. That's pretty much every function call ever - all I'm interested in is the calli

I'm going to disagree on that. Every day I wish I could intermix textual and pictorial representations of logic in the programming I do. In particular, any series of computations that can be represented as a directed graph, e.g. a stre

I'm a little skeptical. Yeah, interpreted languages are slow, but under the hood numpy / Matlab call out to BLAS/LAPACK. There's a constant overhead per function call, but if you "vectorize" your computations t

Yeah, so don't make an enclosure. For one-offs and small runs, there are companies that will sell you a box - you design your PCB to fit. Way cheaper.

Yeah, I heard about it. I think Eagle is a sinking ship. The low-end PCB design software market is going to be swallowed up by KiCAD, which has been getting much better ever since CERN decided to sponsor it. Can't beat free and unencum

Eh, Eagle in this day in age? If you're going cheap, I'd stick with KiCAD. It's unintuitive, like GIMP vs Photoshop, but gets the job done with no restrictions on functionality. I've also heard decent things about Circui
