Maybe it's because I started as a chemist, where you look at patents all the time, but yes I've absolutely looked at patents for inspiration, to figure out how things work, to attack certain problems, etc.

I think like all things, it depends on the quality of the product. There are definitely cheap ferrofluids with mediocre surfactants that break down over time. But I also suspect (never looked, just inferring from the myriad of surfactants o

I actually think we are mostly on the right path, with the greatest exception being the current cost and overhead required to train the very best language models. But we are already seeing smaller, fine-tunable, user-deployable models. I

Just run SponsorBlock or similar then. If you still want to support creators, you can tune the plugin to only skip filler, or as I do, just prompt with a Skip button and I can choose to jump as needed.

You don't need monochromatic green light - that was just the test condition to find the best wavelength. Broad spectrum sunlight should do the trick.

Why are diesels so uncommon among piston aircraft, it's almost always avgas? Is it just "because that's how it's always been" or are there actual engineering reasons diesel are inferior? Cursory searching suggests i

It's the intensity of it that strikes me. It's not just a matter of not liking their new stuff. I've encountered many folks that are basically mad the band changed directions. Almost as if the band owes it to the world to k

My surface level take is they are similar to M-estimators. Whereas M-estimators are more mathematically rigorous, Windsorized metrics might be easier to compute manually. It does feel like it's a very early 20th century technique. Nowa

Oxygen is an indicator of life, but not a strong one, as there are many processes which could create an oxygen atmosphere. What is a strong indicator is the presence of both oxidizing (oxygen, ozone) and reducing (hydrogen, methane, dimet

Maybe a better analogy is nitromethane. If you put it in your honda civic, you will blow up your engine. You put it in a top-fuel dragster which cranks out thousands of hp and needs an engine rebuild after each race.
