Man, if there is one thing I hate about the tech industry is how everything becomes a subscription. A dollar here, two dollars elsewhere, and at the end of the day you own nothing and gave full control of your work to FAANG. Games, Adobe wi

It absolutely is a monopoly. They control the distribution within an OS that a good chunk of the population uses. Phones are not commodity devices that one can build in a shack - they require significant effort and investment, and it’s not

That’s rich coming from a company that tries to illegally set up surveillance over those it deems are “hacking” its platform.

This is the most Silicon Valley response ever to the new law. Yeah, poor people are struggling with 3 jobs, but Uber is the problem. Maybe let’s address public transportation and the underlying reasons for 3 jobs instead of having a Silicon

How is that different from any other country, where you can’t open a bank account unless you are a citizen or a resident?

But that’s a whole separate problem, no? That’s like saying “Accidental lottery winners complain they have to pay taxes, but hey, we need to make sure the tax code is good for everyone” - totally, but don’t paint the article like it’s some

> countless accidental [...] Linked article says a bit more than 3,000 around the world. So, 0.001%. Article content is clickbait. Basically, a very small part of the population complains about something that others work decades on.

As someone who worked with Rawtherapee, it’s without exaggeration that I will say that the tool is _nowhere close_ to ready for serious photo editing. Frequent crashes, poor performance and inability to deal with large RAW files is a dealbr

And? Why should we still be adapting the security and privacy model we had 20 years ago? To your analogy, 20 years ago this bit us all in the ass just as much because every EXE brought with it all sorts of toolbars and adware. I don’t want

It is not. I can open someone’s blog without knowing what trackers they have. A site has inherently a different trust boundary than an executable, and it should stay that way.

A video game installation is a conscious choice that I can make depending on whether I trust the vendor or not. Me visiting New York Times and getting 58 trackers scraping my device configuration and preferences is not a choice.

I am honestly more surprised by the fact that we let these kinds of APIs creep into our browsers. What’s the scenario where a website needs to know how much RAM or what kind of video adapter I have? I get it for a game or a desktop app, but

Cost, lack of debugging capabilities, terrible developer tools, cryptic documentation that misses some key scenarios, I can go on. Now, I get it, you’re at AWS so you would never openly and bluntly come out and say that what you -really- wa

YMMV, of course. The problem with lock-in is that you start designing code that is for a given vendor, AWS in this case. Once you find that the vendor either is prohibitive cost or functionality-wise, you will have to spend your development

Why would you want to put it in Lambda then when there are better options?

▲

All fine and dandy, until it is not. Lambda = massive vendor lock-in, which means once you start depending on it, it’ll be hard to rip it out of your system and replace with someone else. My startup used to heavily rely on Lambda and frankl

Seems broken on Android, as a heads-up. This also seems to omit the fact that a lot of times people in devrel are at the intersection of many areas, so a pie chart doesn’t do it justice.

Yet another reason why I prefer buying physical/DRM-free copies of things I want to use in the long run. There is not a single cloud software vendor I can trust to not screw me over in 5 years when they either force me to have an accou
