Sierra Nevada local here. There are very few events in my life that have been more emotional than the time I saw a mountain lion dead on the side of I80. I don't agree with the article's scare tactics, but I'm all for taking

Unfortunately this happens en masse to Asian American students. The discrimination adcoms use against them force them to attend schools that are far too easy for them. This has positives and negatives. They can coast to a great GPA in the m

That anecdote can hardly be considered relevant, no? We're talking about national suicide rates, and you're bringing up a story about a fence that (maybe?) happened at a school in one of the wealthiest districts in the US.

It's also not true. Lenders don't give a shit who they lend to so long as the loan qualifies for insurance by the government or can be sold to a GSE.

I have more empathy for people who are intellectually stunted and now buy into conspiracy theories. They really never had a choice. If the US or their parents had provided them with sufficient education, maybe it would have been different,

It's not entirely clear to me why this is any different from many other sovereign justice systems. I think the point stands that people who obey the 'laws' of their 'government' aren't subjected to random acts

Since you have such specific demands for a study that will satisfy your prejudices, I think you should find it yourself instead of demanding other, more resourceful and open minded people find it for you.

That joke was mildly funny when I first saw it five years ago. I’m not sure why you think Hacker News is the right place to regurgitate such a hackneyed, distracting and irrelevant joke.

I don't get the point of this. The SAT is never used by colleges outside of the context of the applicant's background. I have full faith that there's nothing College Board can add to knowledge of an applicant that admissions

I've put 50k miles on my prius over the past 6 years, with the vast majority of my fuel coming from out of state. I would be a fool to switch to EV.

“I thought Illinois was progressive and would want to encourage EV ownership.” Illinois just pretends to be progressive because it allows politically connected people to steal more money.

The comment is in reference to how much it can explain the growth in house prices. Vancouver has seen >60% growth in the past five years. So, 5% is tiny in explaining the growth. https://www.rebgv.org/market-watch/ML

I'm more interested in what logic is than what it feels like. I think it's the same logic I'd use if I sat in gum at a discount theater, and the owner responded with "I'll pay for your pants, but only if you never c

I think it's pretty reasonable. It forces people to ask if their relationship with Uber is worth a claim that they're making. If Uber doesn't add $100 of value to your life, then claim the $100.
