I'm quite happy with duplicity for backing up to S3. It's incremental backups that fits in the with the S3 charging model, so you only pay for restores. I did find that it's important to set it to do a full backup from time

Many accountants tend to avoid trying to give you advice on cross border tax issues, mainly because they aren't qualified to give you proper advice and it can be so complex that even the authorities don't understand it. So, you s

I mentioned the gethostbyname call during an interview with this question. The interviewer reminded me that gethostbyname was deprecated and we had a short discussion about the recently discovered vulnerability in the glibc implementation

If you look at average wages in China, I think they have a long way to go to mop up labour slack. The problem is it's reaching a point where it's becoming more complex to mop up the rest by growing their more productive and exper

I don't think bet365 does the kind of volumes a popular betting exchange would, but I do agree they are probably the kinds of traffic volume that can benefit from Erlang.

I was recently looking for a new job, and from the job specs and interviews I have realised that 'DevOps' means very different things to many people. I am a system administrator who likes to automate things and write code, and al

I always had the feeling the djb's software is going to be interesting but never going to be widely adopted long term. I think this feeling turned out to be right, since I rarely come across environments running anything from djb, esp

Interesting, average rent in London is around £1000/month, plus £44 council tax (e.g. Wandsworth), plus monthly travelcard £120, gas and electricity £45, broadband/phone £16, mobile phone £15. Leaves about £60/week for food,

I would say Berlin would look good, cost of living there is decent mainly due to the reasonable rental costs and good transport, and the demand and job mobility that has improved a lot there. Dublin also wouldn't rate too badly. Lond

I'm sure the tax makes it competitive compared others in the same time zone like London, Amsterdam or Berlin, but to me it seems to be succeeding in creating a critical mass of tech skills around Dublin that can stick beyond the taxes.

I found political satire to be a very good way to learn about British politics and a bit of culture before, during and after I lived in the UK. I have looked for something similar in Ireland, and even with a country that has some shared hi

The regulation also doesn't do price fixing. It sets additional standards, or what I refer to as 'quality fixing'. The effect is that prices go up and competition go down, but quality will at least be something people will

I often recommend people read the little book "The Manual" by the KLF. http://freshonthenet.co.uk/the-manual-by-the-klf/ It was written by them after they made their first number 1 hit single, back in 1988.
